Anyone come across this before?
Got my upgrade voucher a couple of months ago, and this week I finally got round to cancelling Avios Rewards in the app so I could join Blue Rewards instead.
Except I couldn’t cancel in the app. Just get an error message. 30 minutes on chat on Sunday “can’t help, try tomorrow during 9-5”. And 30 minutes on the phone today, and they still can’t cancel it. Apparently the only way to do it is via the app, and there is a ‘known issue’. Despite my protestations that I want to cancel today, their best advice was ‘keep trying’.
What am I supposed to do? Has anyone else been trapped in Avios Rewards?
Yes… support are rubbish aren’t they
The fix in the end was really simple for me
Log out of your Barclays App, and then log into it again – it should now allow you to leave the Avios Rewards programme in app.
I went through all that you went through, but the above solution was only given to me as an option when I told them I needed to join Blue Rewards that day – not sure if they were being difficult / restrictive, inept, or all of the above 🙄🙄
Please let me know how you get on.
I was under the impression that Blue Rewards was no longer available to join
Thanks. Sadly log out and in didn’t work for me. I’ve sent them a stroppy letter by snail mail. Not sure what else I can do!
Blue Rewards still looks open to me.
Sorry it didn’t work (assumed you had latest version of the app? – I probs should’ve mentioned I was using iOS?)
Blue Rewards defo still exists 🙂 I signed up to it about 20 days ago. Harder to get a “profit” now though unless you have a mortgage with them, but good to access the special savings account 🙂
Still can’t leave Avios Rewards, a month later!
But after a snail mail complaint letter, I’m currently having the monthly fee refunded, while still receiving the Avios, and can join Blue Rewards at the same time. So all’s well that ends well.
I’m having this issue as well – should have done a search in this forum before trying…
I reported it yesterday (was getting an “SP042” error message). They called me back later in the day to confirm that this is a known issue, which they are working on.
I’m going to try the complaint route to make sure that I’m not charged for future months.
Yep, that’s the error message I was getting.
They don’t appear to have a fix yet, because I’m still subscribed to Avios Rewards, still getting the fee refunded…
I had the same issue and error code. I had the fee refunded for four months (but still received the avios each month as Barclays were incapable of switching it off). I’ve closed the account now though.
Just a further update. Eight months after I tried to leave, and 7 months after I complained to Barclays.
I’m still a member of Avios Rewards, and they still don’t seem to be able to cancel it. I’ve now had 7 months fee refunded, so I’m up by 10,500 Avios and two goodwill gestures. I suspect I will be racking up refunds until the heat death of the universe.
Impressively, they managed to sent the latest refund to a completely different Barclays account.

😂 🤦🏻♂️
If you want actual resolution, complain to the chief exwcutive’s direct email. Executive complaints will then resolve it. In my experience that’s the only way to get Barclays to resolve anything…

To be honest, I’m quite happy without a resolution!
Every month, without fail, they take the fee and send me the Avios. And every month, without fail, my friend in Customer Services calls me, apologises, refunds the fee, and says she’s been assured it’ll be fixed next month.
I rather hope it isn’t!
For anyone who’s counting, further to my post in todays article, it’s now 16 months they’ve been taking the fee, giving me the Avios, and refunding the fee.
Occasionally I have to get back in touch with CS and give them a nudge.
A fix is promised ‘soon’. I hope not!
Did you also get the upgrade voucher, by any chance?
Yes, upgrade voucher appeared without problem
Rich – I’d been wondering about this the other day… that’s brilliant / crazy 😂
It’s wild!
I’m told that a fix was rolled out in May, then rolled back again as it was causing problems.
It must be costing them a fortune. If they were leaking £15 a month in cash, I’m pretty sure they would have fixed it by now – or forcibly closed the affected accounts. I wonder how many people are affected.
I don’t know much about IT, but it’s hard to work out why it’s so difficult.
