Have a one night stopover in San Francisco at the Canopy by Hilton on 4th street next April. So just weighing up cost of hiring a car versus just jumping in a taxi. Anyway got any recent experience of what taxi,s would cost incl tax and tips ?
No cheap parking in downtown so not sure car hire is a great idea.
In the Uber app just change your location and pretend you’re at the airport and put in your destination to get an idea of fares.
30 bucks + tips (20% is common) in a Lyft, a little more if you take one off the rank. Theres a train every 15 minutes if you want to avoid peak time traffic and save money, although you will have a short (10 min) walk at the hotel end.
Hiring a car will involve taking the SkyTrain shuttle to the car hire centre which will slow you down, plus you will have to pay for parking (assuming your hotel has a valet).
In short – Taxi!
The BART fare will be $10 each way.
+1 the yellow line will be $10 and take you an easy 10 minute walk away to Powell.
Car hire then central san francisco parking will be slower than that and considerably more expensive – don’t do this.
Ride app will be no faster at peak times either, although maybe shave off 15 minutes during quieter periods.
This should be enough for you to weigh the cost/convenience scales. Personally I’d do BART with hand luggage but taxi with millions of suitcases.
