Just a quick post to say how pleased I was to close my Barclaycard WEM through the online chat tool that took about 5 minutes in total. No messing around, selecting which department I needed on the phone, or long attempts to stall me.. Very refreshing.

Make sure it does actually close, took me multiple attempts!
I do worry that the one I cancelled to wait six months for the Avios card is still working. It’s still in my app, they said it would be there for a month.

Yes you can’t rely on it/expect it but you may be lucky…
Tried closing mine using the phone. It diverts you to an automated system when you select the account closure options. It gets you to input the card details, security passcode and then confirms it’s been cancelled and to destroy the card (but pay off the balance!). Did it twice! Naturally it doesn’t work and got charged a fresh month (and the chat agent confirms that the card is NOT cancelled). So don’t trust the phone route!!
