We have an expiring 2-4-1 voucher and 10-14 days annual leave to use up in July.
I fancy going to a couple of smaller Greek islands like Sifnos or Amorgos, and use the 2-4-1 to fly Club Europe, stay in a greek pension and eat out at local tavernas. My girlfriend on the other hand fancies something a bit more exotic. She wants to go to a Caribbean island and probably self cater. Obviously its too late to find business flights, so we’d have to fly economy.
Have you looked for availability? You might find it easier to get business class to the Caribbean rather than Greece at this point in the year!
Though if it’s a old-style 241 you’re stuck with the max avios option on long haul, if that’s an issue.
Greece is significantly more exotic than the Caribbean which is mainly a make believe playground for rich Brits, Americans and Canadians, so does have many supposedly ‘fancy’ resorts. The Caribbean is also more expensive, much more humid than Greece and many Caribbean islands suffer from the ghastly seaweed. The food and local wine in Greece whether purchased in a shop or in a taverna will be vastly superior to anything you will find in the Caribbean where most stuff is imported or frozen.
I’m on holiday in Greece at the moment, it’s wonderful.

+1 currently in Ikos Dassia, Corfu would never swap for Caribbean.
The length of a flight is not correlated with the sophistication of a destination.
Greece has no meaningful crime, a stunning coastline, world-class cuisine based on fresh local ingredients, and one of the most hospitable populations on the planet. As a cradle of Western society, the importance of its history is paralleled only by Italy, Israel and, possibly, Egypt. The islands have smart boutiques full of locally made products, and you will find every facility that a sophisticated tourist could want. Greece has relatively few large hotels run by multinational businesses, but I see that as a bonus; you will instead find yourself immersed in a vibrant local community.
These days, tourism in some of the larger Greek islands is dominated by American visitors. There are many good reasons why they choose to make a long journey to Greece instead of taking a short hop to the Caribbean.
Whilst (almost) everything in life needs to be tried at least once, I find it hard to imagine being as excited by the thought of a Caribbean holiday as a I am by one in Greece.
Thank you for all the responses and views. Although not sure if chatgpt has struck with one of them?! I’ve got to say it, I’ve never found Greek food to really hit the spot, especially after more than a few days of the same stuff. Maybe my taste buds are not as sophisticated.
I think if you spent £600 a night on a hotel at any destination, you’re highly likely to enjoy yourself. But sadly, I am guided by my wallet a little more than you are it seems. Glad you’re having a lovely time. 🙂
Hmm, I have had some lovely holidays in Greece, both relaxing and educational, but I suspect quite a few of those American visitors were inspired by the film version of Mamma Mia …

One of which was filmed in Croatia!
Greece has been absolutely stuffed with American tourists the last couple of years. I suspect this will be the last year of that as their currency weakens.
I laughed loudly at the Malaga comment. That’s true for places like Jolly Harbour in Antigua or much of Barbados (having not even mentioned Cancun). But surely Greece attracts the same crowd? You get a mix of people everywhere, and you just need to pick the areas you like or feel would suit.
I’m also in Greece at the moment. Just had a week on Aegina and 5 days on Hydra, all excellent.
In Athens now and it’s very busy, particularly with Americans.
My wife likes the Caribbean, but I’m not a huge fan despite a few visits 🤔

No need to spend £600 per night in Greece unless you’re unwise enough to go to Mykonos. The picture-perfect hotel on the sea front in Koufonissia that I recently visited is £166 per night next week, for example – and you don’t need Hilton status for the outstanding breakfast that’s included in the rate. And excellent evening meals with wine in the local taverna were usually less than £15 per head. Great holidays needn’t be expensive.

Oh dear me please don’t spread this news about, the islands with airports are already over touristed

Dear oh dear we’re now getting as far as actually naming lovely islands with great beaches, food and atmosphere, Shhhh please

Ah yes those fork eaters, at least the dearth of chain hotels limits their numbers on the islands
I arrived on Mykonos by boat from another island this morning, I’m keeoing quiet about that island because I found a wonderful beach there, the hotel here on Mykonos is €140 a night with a fanatastic breakfast and brilliant hosts.

Now that’s the way, good chap.

ohh, here we go again.
Seriously though, I’ve never been to Greece but after all the great recommendations, I Will definitely visit in the not too distant future.
I found it very hard to find places with decent scuba and nice places to stay booking a holiday in Greece this August. Divers often put up with crappy accommodation to be near the best diving, but this diver doesn’t, and my OH certainly won’t. We settled on Kefalonia since we’re meeting friends for a drive around the Peloponnese, and the scuba looks decent. But at 2.5k for 6 nights, August doesn’t feel that cheap! Places in the Peloponnese are much more sensibly priced, so I guess it’s our choice of Kefalonia.
This is our first time to Greece, so can’t comment on food, but as a Caribbean regular, I can’t imagine anywhere in Europe could be as bad for food as the Caribbean. It can sometimes be great, but there is an awful lot of very mediocre food. And on islands frequented by Americans, it’s expensive, not the least bit local, and not very good.
Still, if you don’t mind splashing cash, the Caribbean is better than many commenters here suggest. Not Maldives great, but then the Maldives looks pricey right now as I scout 2024 holidays.

Skiathos is a good place for scuba diving and Halkidiki close to Sani resort
