Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
I made a payment / deposit for a campervan rental on my Barclaycard Avios card at the end of October. As far as I was aware I was making a stirling transaction and it would be treated as any other credit-card type purchase.
However, I got a ping on my credit score that I had made a cash advance of £251. It has had a minor impact to my score. Possibly looking for a mortgage in the summer.
Is there any “point” in querying this transaction with Barclaycard via the app? I don’t dispute the validity of the transaction, but it was not clear that it would be treated as a cash advance. Thankfully I used Currensea to pay the remaining balance after seeing I was paying FX fees.
It’s possible an underwriter might ask you about it, something similar happened to my sister with a car rental. But as long as you can explain it then can’t see it being an issue and they may only look back 3 months anyway
I seriously doubt Barclaycard will do anything about it so not sure I’d waste my time
I would disagree, I think it is worth querying. Ultimately the item is allocated a transaction type code and in your case, it got assigned one which counts as a cash advance.
I had exactly the same thing happen last month with my MBNA card. I wasn’t sure what had triggered it and so called them to discuss, mainly to make sure I didn’t do it again! The chap was extremely helpful (the MBNA CS team have always been excellent for me) finding out what had happened.
He identified the transaction involved and changed the code on it as he believed it to be incorrect (as did I, hence the call) and he also reversed the interest charges. I didn’t ask for either, he readily offered.
I am not saying Barclays will be as helpful, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get.
Thanks both for the advice, even if differing views. Barclays have a “form” within the app. I may fill it in, see what happens and report back. Given I can explain it, to SamG’s point, I probably wont lose too much sleep over it, just frustrating.
I will also do a new dummy booking on the camoervan website and see if I missed something obvious.
Worth filling in a form but Barclaycard are absolutely the most incompetent financial provider I have ever dealt with (and many others on here would agree!) hence my pessimism that anything will actually happen 😂
Could be helpful to others to flag it to the campervan company as it may be something they can get changed with their merchant services provider
