Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Cathay rewards now bookable online with Qatar Airways

  • 241 posts

I read today that you can now book Cathay reward flights online at the old BA partner price via Qatar, with no fuel surcharges and most importantly it no longer requires a form filled in etc. – you can just search and book. So less Avios and less cash compared to booking via BA. Hopefully Qatar extend this to JAL.

That’s great, but is there any availability? I always struggle to find anything from CX!

Let’s say you want to depart HKG and use a BA Gold card to access the wonderful First lounges prior to the flight. If booked as a reward via Qatar I wonder how easy it is to either change the FF number online (perhaps via Finnair?) or show BA status at lounge etc.?

I was looking (admittedly at the rather obscure Seoul Hong Kong route) on the app just now – the “more dates” tab stated “not available” for every single date but by searching individually day by day there was in fact economy space every day and a few business tickets dotted around too.

Yes both of those options would work to change the FF number as well as the Cathay App which lets you change the number if there are Cathay flights involved

Ok thanks – and to confirm that’s having specifically started with a QR privilege club booking?

Yes, not CX but I did an AA booking via QR avios and was able to change the FF number on Finnair

CX availability in general has been very tight recently, other than some intra-Asia routes. Not impossible to get long haul, but a lot harder than it has been, they’re releasing very little. I’ve been searching using BAEC and QFF, and getting hardly anything.

Some cash fares have been ok though, I paid ~$2k for J NRT-HKG-MEL-HKG-NRT, which I’m happy with. Didn’t need to go to Japan, had actually planned to spend all my time in HK, but a few days in Osaka and then Tokyo made a nice change, plus I get to go back in six months as the return half (I’m currently on my six month “layover” in Australia 😂).

CX intra-Asian have had pretty fab availability for me recently and decent rates too. You can convert Amex MR to Asia Miles 1:1 (I don’t think the scheme’s name or the fact you can convert Amex points is immediately obvious to infrequent Cathay-goers)

Has anyone actually managed to get a CX flight to price up via QR? At the point I select a flight, it displays the number of avios and a spinning wheel where it should show the fees and never gets any further.

Just got BKK-SIN to show on the QR app. 16,500 Avios and 780THB (under £20) vs BA which is showing 30,000 Avios and £40. Sample date was September 16th.

It went past the spinning wheel to the trip summary and allows me to confirm passport details. Not going any further as I don’t need to fly from BKK to SIN that day….

Its working now. Its strange, it had been doing the spinning rather than showing fees since yesterday.
