Good morning from Tanah Gajah resort nearby to Ubud, Bali.
We checked in here 2 nights ago on a Luxury escapes package which was cheaper than Expedia or direct booking and includes lots of perks like USD300 to spend at the spa, 1 time hot air balloon ride and either daily lunch or dinner from a fixed menu. The report is superb and we have had an active morning that started at 6.30am with the hot air balloon ride followed a trip to Kuber ATV quad biking about 30 mins away where we had a fabulous time zipping through the rice terraces and a local waterfall.
The resort is absolutely beautiful – I would highly recommend it to couples and families.

    Sounds great.
How long was the balloon ride and where did you start and end?

Oh no, Harvey Nicks just refunded me for an item ordered last month but which is now unavailable.

I had specifically told them not to refund me but they’ve done it anyway.

So this takes my spend below the threshold for the Amex Platinum HN £50 statement credit.

I’ve already received the statement credit.

Am I likely to lose it? Is there anyway to avoid losing it, given the offer expired a couple of weeks ago.

    Anyone got any thoughts?

    Thanks

In H1 2025 I had a partial refund from HN after the full Amex credit was given. It was never clawed back.
Partial might be the key fact there.

It’s a fixed tethered balloon ride, lasting about 7-8 mins. Never done anything like it before so it was a good experience. We had it included in our package, cost otherwise is about £100 which I would say is ok in terms of vfm as the view across Ubud is fantastic at sunrise.

Thank you. So all is not necessarily lost.

Oh right, sounds like something I did at a mall somewhere, but with better views.

Hilton points redemption – looks like Hilton has found a way to combine a standard and premium redemption. While searching for hotels in the app, it says ‘standard room reward’ but when you go to book, it jacks up the rate to double the standard rate from 2nd night. I guess previously this would have come up as no standard redemption availability. One more step closer to fixed value redemptions, but its quite cheeky how they hide this in the search page on the app.

While searching on the website though, it does say ‘standard room reward for first night’.

So I had a quick check on a hotel I’m intending to book.
If I want to book just the first night on its own, there are no standard reward rooms available. The cheapest room is 68k premium reward.
If I then select a whole week starting with that date, the rate changes to 30k for the first night and it becomes a standard reward.

    I don’t think that’s normal is it?

Yes, Hilton price a room depending on the check-in and check-out dates and have done so for years. Doesn’t matter whether it’s cash or points.

I played them at their own game in Vegas one year by moving between two of their hotels to get around a “no rooms available”, and then making the check out date a day after I’d flown home and just let the booking auto check out.

Also factor in that if you’re staying for a week, the 5 nights for 4 (or more accurately the 5th night is free) on points kicks in.

Are you sure it’s a 100% standard reward? In my case, on the billing page, the points required suddenly jumped as it claimed that from 2nd night, it became a premium reward.

Sad affair at Southend, but why in earth is the airport still closed? The same palaver that we have on incidents on motorways and trains causing endless disruption. Frankly pathetic in my opinion.
