Interesting. Didn’t know this. However, in what circumstances is it allowed if a bath isn’t present in the bathroom?
3 metres is pretty extreme, especially when you can have power outlets just outside the bathroom door, which might be less than 3 metres from the bath edge.
I work in construction, so do acknowledge the reasons… but, I just find it all madening, especially when building standards minimum size requirements for bathrooms would never allow it to happen. Plug sockets are only allowed for those who can afford big wet/bathrooms!
The 3m also applies to a shower, and I think is to minimise risk associated to splashes or steam (which also explains why it’s not a problem having nearby sockets in the next room). Light fittings are the same – different requirements apply depending on where the fitting is in relation to the bath/shower.
Zone 0,1,2, lighting in Zone 0 has to be Extra low voltage, 12v max, and be at least ip67 rated, and so on, the regulations are pretty straight forward, the regulations are there for a reason, if someone feels the need to insert an extension lead into a socket outside the bathroom, and use it while in a bath, that’s their lookout!
There is no regulation to have a domestic property tested, even before a sale, this needs to be changed, as there are so many dangerous situations that are not detected.
Funny that elf n safety business in the uk, I have no problem plugging in a toaster and kettle on a shelf above my bath in our Spanish home and enjoying breakfast in the bath.
