I think we’re going to have to be potentially quite fluid depending on the weather!

You are indeed. I lost my one and only chance to drive Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain NP as just as they were about to reopen it for the season it got another 2ft of snow overnight. I left the hotel, drove back south towa4d Denver and then west to stay on schedule and they reopened it about 3 hours after I left 🙁

Don’t forget to buy https://store.usgs.gov/2025-annual-pass at the first park you visit. If you’re not familiar you can buy them at the entrance station if there is one, or at the vistor centre. I hear they’re going to massively increase the price for non-US citizens, so get it while it’s cheap.

Thanks. TBH we have 4 nights in Vegas meeting up with our son and his friend when we land, and given that we want to have 2 nights in Denver at the end we’ve essentially blocked out 6 nights / days already. We’re active and walk in The Dales quite a bit but obviously with a bit of driving between all the things we want to do we also want to keep in mind that we’ll need to be walking early to finish early, so that we can then move to the next destination. We’ve looked at The Wave but obviously with the permit lottery that wouldn’t be a given.

Currently planning on going from Vegas to Page for a night for Antelope Canyon / Horseshoe bend, then onto Springdale for a couple of nights for Angels Landing, The Narrows etc. After that up to Bryce Canyon (BC) for a night. BC is then a 4hr drive to Moab for The Arches. We’ve then a couple of nights to play with so we could then head to Ouray for the hot springs, passing by Telluride (looks like a good suggestion). I think we’re going to have to be potentially quite fluid depending on the weather!

I would honestly think twice about spending time in Denver itself. There are very few must sees and like most US cities it suffers terribly from homelessness and open drug abuse (Green Day’s Coma City springs to mind). We only stayed there as we were attending a gig but we wouldn’t rush to go back there. Others would no doubt disagree but that was how we saw it.
Maybe look at somewhere like Boulder instead and spending time in the foothills of the Rockies in El Dorado Canyon State Park.

That was meant to be in reply to @cookstardeluxe but don’t know what happened to the formatting!

Dead Horse State point is near Moab

Sounds like you’re missing Monument Valley

@Cookstardeluxe – I would definitely go to Silverton, Ouray and Telluride if the weather is good but as others have said, at that time of years things will be closed and if there is heavy snow, roads will also be closed. The I70 from Grand Junction to Denver is a nice drive as Interstates go. We’ve stayed a number of times in Durango, Ouray and Silt-Rifle en route to Denver. Gunnison is also worth a visit as is Mese Verde. If you’ve never been to Minument Valley I would definitely recommend visiting.

You definitely need a plan B. Three years ago we were at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque in early October. Our plan was to go via Durango and Ouray, but plan B was straight up the I25 should there be heavy snow. We were lucky that year. Rocky Mountain NP, which is NW of Denver is also spectacular in the fall.

I used to like Denver, but the centre on our last visit was very run down. We felt sorry for anyone staying in the Marriott in centre of town as they had to step over bodies to get in and out! The soup kitchen was directly outside in the morning. Drug taking was openly taking place on the streets. We spent one night there and that was enough and we were only there because the REI shop is apparently the biggest/best in the US and my son wanted to buy trekking gear from there.

Sorry, I should have said! We’re there in the last two weeks of October. We weren’t planning on doing the full permit walk for Angels Landing, and as we’ve some time we’re getting our Antelope Canyon trip booked in. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll take a look.

Can you not find enough to do in those areas for 2 weeks?

Moab to Denver is maybe 6 hrs so not exactly a long drive.

What is you full itinerary so far?

Probably not a good time to go to Tuweep, though your 4×4 may cope…

You could try for a Walk in permit for The Wave.

    Short daylight hours late October.

Dead Horse State Point is not far from Moab

Looks like you’re missing Monument Valley.

Thinking about an 0945 domestic flight from LHR T2. Would I need to arrive 2hrs beforehand to reliably get through security, or is tighter timing likely ok?

Will you have fast track security? T2 in mornings can be horrific

Anyone know if KLM are happy to check bags through to final destination on KLM flights booked as separate tickets?
e.g. Beijing > Amsterdam, and separately Amsterdam > London a few hours later? The entire journey (including outbound to Hong Kong) is about £700 pp difference(PE on the longhaul) so well worth knowing and doing if OK.

A train ticket I need this weekend is costing around £50 return
    Just checking the maths here
But the current cashback offers I have are

Uber Trains- 3% Cashback Credit (£1.50), 50 Avios for Booking Direct, then Paid on Curve where I have 1% cashback with Barclaycard Avios Plus (£0.50 + 75 Avios)= £2 Cashback + 125 Avios

LNER offer on my Virgin Atlantic CC (Free Card)- 5% Cashback = £2.50 + 37 Virgin Points

Virgin Trains – 6 Points per £1 paid with Barclaycard Avios Plus = 300 Virgin Points + 75 Avios

At 1p/Point Virgin Train seems the best offer currently
Unless anyone else knows any other offers out there
