Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Check through on multiple tickets

Read an article today saying OW are looking to introduce allowing people to check through on multiple carriers.

It doesn’t specify if this will be allowed on multiple tickets, but that would be welcome news if so.

It’s very vague. You can already check luggage through as long as you’re on one PNR – does this mean BA reversing the unpopular decision not to check through on other bookings?
Also would people still have to collect bags and recheck at many US airports?

@ekposh – BA already checks bags through, including with non OW carriers as long as it’s on one booking and has done so for many years, along with most IATA airlines.

While it is technically possible for BA to check through bags on OW or multi carrier separate bookings, they choose not to because it requires manual processing which increases error rate and takes up too much time (= cost and/or increased check-in queues). The policy is also in place because why take on the liability for lost luggage when you don’t need to and separate ticketing is often revenue negative for the airline.

BA follows OW policy as does AA and IB and AY. This policy came into effect in 2016.

Absent a couple of specific exceptions you always have to collect your bags and clear customs on arrival into the US and this wouldn’t change that.

I suppose that is my point. It’s been doing so for years, so is this statement an indication that it will fundamentally change and allow separate bookings / tickets to be checked through (not withstanding the US stuff which has to be done regardless)?

I know we can’t derive any conclusions but as I understand it, SkyTeam happily check through on miles / cash separate bookings so be great if OW adopted the same approach.
