Forums Payment cards American Express Churn and burn Platinum while keeping BAPP?

  • 137 posts

I’ve had my BAPP card for a few years now and am most of the way to the £15k threshold for my fourth 241, which I’m confident I’ll hit with my normal spending. However I’m also expecting to buy a kitchen in the next month or two, which will allow me to put £10k through a card… and the 80,000 signup bonus points on Platinum looks tempting! This leads me to some probably simple questions:

    1) If I get the Platinum card, is that in addition to or replacing the BAPP card? The 241 is still to priority and I don’t want to jeapodise that.

    2) Once I’ve got my 80,000 sign up bonus points, I’d probably want to cancel the card with the pro rata fee refund. Will the Amex points stay on my account with me BAPP card, or do I need to have moved them away first? (I’d ideally want to keep them flexible until needed)

    Advise welcome…

1, in addition (assuming Amex accept your application)

    2. no, they will stay on your membership rewards account — you need to proactively log in and transfer them to BA EC — ideally before you close the Platinum, but I think there is a few days after closure when you can still log in and do this

If you are planning to transfer to Avios, as soon as you have the Platinum and Membership Rewards, link your Amex and BA accounts to ensure no problems later when you want to transfer the substantial 80k bonus.

    Thanks for the response!

Perfect! (Sorry if that was a stupid question!)

I would ideally want keep the points in my membership awards account long after I cancel the Platinum, and only transfer them to BAEC, VA Flying club or even Flying Blue or Delta once I have a plan for them. I infer from your response that this isn’t possible. (Perhaps I could downgrade to Blue to achieve this?)

Yes. This article covers how to do this:
