Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Club with £700 or First with £1700?

  • 17 posts

I have a 2-4-1 that i am planning to use for a New York trip. My dilemma is should i book club which is 160000 to 180000 Avios plus £700 taxes for 2 or book first which is 138000 to 160000 and £1700 taxes for 2.

Does extra £1000 worth it to fly first over club?

Assuming off peak, flying first would also save me 22000 Avios but still £1000 extra in taxes.

    TIA

If the extra cash is affordable, and especially if you don’t have Silver status or above, go F. Unfortunately you can’t mix classes any more without swingeing surcharges (unless that only applies to doing one leg in CW, I haven’t checked PE and Y). With F you get free seat selection at the time of booking, access to the Concorde room plus the services of You First who are generally wonderful. Then of course the F experience on board which is very pleasant indeed – plus you’ll be first off and if you time it right can be through immigration in about 10 minutes.

Now I would say that it’s also a great choice as there are day flights back from JFK and EWR, however I think they may not have F cabins. 6 hours trying to grab some sleep isn’t the greatest use of F but you’d be in the most comfortable seats! That said, I suppose if you got the next flight of the day home I think that leaves about 1800, so it would only be 2 am US time when you land and you could just go to bed when you get home!

F is for +9hr flights. On a LON-NYC if the winds are favourable you won’t get to enjoy the service on the plane that much.

That said, if you are a lounge fan you will get Concorde on one side and the new whatever it is called new AA champagne bar at JFK. This may be important or a highlight for you.

I agree that a longer flight would be preferable but you also need to factor in the lack of F award availability, number of avios you have, expiry date of 241 and dates you can actually travel!

I’d do F out on an afternoon flight and then J back on the day flight personally. But as @NorthernLass says I think this causes some weirdness with the pricing so you’d have to price it up

I don’t think I’d even bother with J on the day flight. You get minimal lounge time when it’s too early to eat and drink much anyway, when we did this from BOS they hadn’t loaded up enough food and quite deliberately left us till last because we were on an award booking then announced the only breakfast item they had was a cheese croissant! OH hates cheese, lol. Probably one of the worst uses of avios ever. The actual day flying experience was great, though, compared with an overnight. It’s so quick back from east coast US I’m going to book PE or even Y next time and hopefully be able to bag good seats as Silver.
