Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Club World welcome drink

  • 6 posts

    Was flying SYD-LHR yesterday.

After boarded the first segment SYd-SIN cabin crew offered champagne or orange juice as welcome drink. I said can I have water.

She then said “oh you have a bottle of water right there”

I said oh that’s not the point – any other airline will gladly pour me a glass of water as a welcome drink. She rolled her eyes and stormed off.

    Was I asking too much?

Happened a few months back as well on a different flight.

@NealMK – yes, you were asking too much as it was totally gratuitous to ask the crew member to interrupt service to pour water into a glass for you when you had some right there in addition to the issue of criticising her for not doing so on a point of principle. I’m not really surprised by her response to that little power play/cry for attention.

I do find it slightly strange that if you would like a drink of water and have a bottle readily available, is getting it in a glass really worth an additional wait, as well as consequently delaying the welcome drink for other passengers while the tray of drinks they thought was heading their way is rerouted back to the galley.

I’m fascinated to know how the ‘stand off’ ended. After storming off, did the crew member return with the requested glass of water, or did the OP blink first and hit the bottle?

If I were you, I’d be hoping this scandal isn’t picked up by the Daily Mail!!

How on earth is it a ‘power play’? Plenty of airlines offer water on boarding. I’ve been offered it plenty of times by BA when they have not opened the fizz for whatever reason.

Instead of eye-rolling, I’d expect an ounce of customer service and on the next run through the cabin with the tray of drinks to see some sparking water. That’s hardly ‘interrupting service’.

Cabin crew snark is a sad trait of BA in all classes. Whether you get good or bad service seems to be a toss of a coin.

Sounds like Water-gate to me. Shocking!

Don’t get me started on the lack of water bottle refilling stations at a huge number of airports.

@masaccio – it’s a power play because of the dynamic and relative positions of the two parties which goes beyond customer service. Imagine if this were in a corporate dining room and the passenger made a similar comment to a member of the catering staff. Any colleague or visitor would be rightly horrified; it’s not how one behaves to staff.

While the cabin crew eye rolling was inappropriate, the situation seems to say more about the OP than BA. Apart from anything else, it also seems unwise, within minutes of boarding, to antagonise the team looking after you for the next nine hours.

It always amazes me how BA manage to find such poor quality orange juice. I still choke one down though.

I’ve found the best way around the ‘made from concentrate’ carton orange juice, and the sometimes iffy champagne is to ask for a 50:50 bucks fizz as somehow the two together seem to make for a better drink.
