Hi dear HfP community,
I wanted to ask for an advice with regards to making a new and “linking” a booking. I currently booked London – Hong Kong on a BA flight using 2-4-1 voucher. However my intention is to go to Koh Samui. I found a flight from HKG – Samui on Bangkok Airways which leaves 2.5 hours after the planned arrival to Hong Kong, which is ideal for a connection.
What is the best way to make a booking so that my luggage is checked through to my final destination (Samui)?
Do I book the Bangkok Airways ticket (HKG – Samui) separately and ask at the airport upon check-in to “link” them together, so that the luggage is checked through?
Do I book the Bangkok Airways ticket separately and then call BA to ask to link the two together?
Is there a way to add the second flight to my existing booking (as I believe Bangkok Airways partners with multiple airlines including BA)?
I would really appreciate any advice you can give!
Thank you!
Short answer is you can’t
BA will not through check to other airlines on seperate bookings and you can’t add either a cash fare or b another avios redemption onto your Avios 241 booking
The only way that this is possible with BA as a carrier is for you to book a cash fare all the way through LHR-HKG-USM
To add to the above, going they other way Bangkok Airways will no longer through check baggage onto other airlines on separate tickets.
You don’t have a connection if you have separate tickets.
Nor do you have 2 1/2 hours.
You have that time less the Bangkok Airlines check in / bag drop close time. Rule of thumb is an hour but check their website.
If the BA flight is late and you miss the onward then BA aren’t obligated to rebook you and you’d then be under whatever policy Bangkok has for missing a flight.
Do not attempt this at HKG with luggage – immigration can take a good while there at busy times and it’s a big airport so covering the distances required also takes a good chunk of time. BA flights to Asia are usually a bit late in my experience also
If you can go hand luggage only then I’d usually be tempted but that flight isn’t daily so missing it will cause you a pretty big headache
Better to book the airport hotel, go into town for some food and then up early for a flight via Bangkok the next morning
