Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Companion not using the return leg of 2 for 1

It’s possible my daughter will not be flying home with us from Singapore this summer. Her ticket is with mine using a ba 2 for 1 companion voucher and she would be using the outward leg. She maybe flying instead to ho chi minh to start a gap year. I appreciate I can’t get the avios back but if she doesn’t use the ticket is there anything I should do. I don’t want her to have issues with singapore immigration. She would have a ticket probably with vietnam airlines to travel onto ho chi minh the day after we would be leaving. Any advice from anyone with first hand experience of this would be most welcome, thanks

Mainly from immigration in general – be honest. I don’t think there’s any problem with not flying the return, but you will instead need to satisfy the immigration requirements – onward journey, funds, visa, etc. Immigration is more interested in the fact you’re leaving, and airlines more interested in you being allowed entry at your destination.

Having been stopped multiple times at all stage of travel for trivial discrepancies (and sometimes involving bribes), as soon as they see an inconsistency in your story you are doomed!

People change their travel plans all the time. No airline can force you to check in for a flight

The only thing Singapore immigration doesn’t like is going airside without intending to travel and then trying to get back into Singapore, but if you have a genuine excuse it is ok too. And she isn’t going to do that anyway

Thank you. That’s all really helpful.

As long as she has a future flight leaving Singapore booked them immigration won’t really be bothered.

On arrival she needs to show – if asked – her onward booking so it needs to be firm and not an ‘I plan to go onto …’

At SIN immigration, you don’t even have to show the Vietnam ticket, to avoid any confusion. Just show the return ticket of yours which has her name on it. When she flies to Vietnam the next day, nobody is going to ask her why she changed her plans. As long as she got the right visa for right duration with Vietnam and can prove the funds.
