Hi everyone!
How does the congestion charge work with rental cars in London? Are you supposed to pay it directly or does the rental company charge you for it later?
Same question for Heathrow drop-off charge too.
Thanks!
You need to pay all these sorts of charges yourself at the time – the hire car company obviously won’t be aware that you have incurred any such charges (and failed to pay them) until they receive a PCN, the cost of which will be passed on to you together with a substantial admin fee.
As per @JDB, make sure you pay these. You can pay the CC online within the period that you’re in the relevant zone, or for a couple of days afterwards, if you haven’t done it before.

Thanks both! 🙂
It was for today. So I just paid it.
Unfortunately it’s my first time renting a car in London, so didn’t know about all this.
I live inside the congestion zone, so I’m a really eligible for th residents discount but since I applied for it only today, seems like I’ll have to pay th full charge for now.
Any idea if there’s a way to get the discount applied retrospectively once it’s approved?
or rent a fully electric
You haven’t got long! EV’s are liable for the congestion charge from 25/12/2025, as a Christmas gift from the government, they are clawing back some revenue now, including road tax for EV’s from 01/04/2025, now there’s plenty of EV’s in circulation, they need to recoup their losses from petrol and diesel fuel duty,

Which also doesn’t exempt you from the Heathrow drop off charge (one of the OP’s questions).
Last time I did Zipcar years ago, it included congestion charge. May be worth double checking.
Yes, Heathrow drop off charge has no mercy.

Thanks for that wasn’t aware it had changed. Looking back at my history it seems I’ve been lucky and always picked electric cars when I’ve driven into central…
