I’m an absolute novice, but open to learning… I know that Direct Debits are not possible using credit cards and at this time when the ‘need’ for Avios earning opportunities is great; I don’t understand why people are not exploring Continuous Payment Authority using their credit cards – particularly for utilities. What am I missing?
1. Most utilities companies don’t accept Amex (directly).
2. You are not in control of a Continuous Payment Authority, the payee is.
3. In order to cancel a CPA, you need to call the payee, if that is a utility company…good luck.
4. Which utility companies offer this payment method? None that I know.
bt accepts payment via Barclays card on monthly basis if you are their subscriber
This is in the Barclays section not Amex, and many utility companies do accept Mastercard, no need for CPA just pay whenever you like and reduce your DD to £5
+1, I use a points-earning MC to top up my energy, water and TV license accounts a couple of times a year and have minimal or no DDs for these.
Does anyone know how one can pay Thames Water using a points earning card? Their payment options are extremely restrictive, including paying a fee at the Post Office, where the limit is £250, so you are forced to include multiple fees.

You go to the Thames Water website and choose to make a one off payment by Debit or Credit Card.
Then use a UK issued card (excluding Amex) that earns points.
Why set up a CPA? Just set up online access to your utility provider or council tax account and either set up a DD of £1 or preferably no DD at all. Then when you get billed log in and pay your account by entering credit card details. I paid council tax and water and electricity/gas supplies this way. Octopus accept Amex and Visa and MC but my water and council tax only accepted Visa or MC. Octopus also allow one off payments at any time so easy to top up and earn a few points.
I have paid Thames Water with non-UK cards, I just enter my UK address. I suspect any random address would work.
You can earn rewards for DDs with Natwest for gift cards or Avios, so I have an Octopus DD for £2 (minimum requirement for Natwest).
