Managed to get reward flights to Costa Rica for 18 days at Christmas.
Here is the planned itinerary so far (not 100% on the order):
1 night is San Jose after flight
La Fortuna
Monteverde
Manuel Antonio
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
Tortugero
Are there any other places worth visiting?
Is Manuel Antonio the best place to visit on the pacific coast?
Is a 4×4 really needed as it is over double the price of a standard saloon?
This was our recent itinerary with activities.
Day 1 – Arrive SJO. Stay in Hampton by Hilton overnight
Day 2 – Shared shuttle to La Fortuna – arrive afternoon. Activity for afternoon?
Day 3 – La Fortuna – Zip wire or white water rafting – could we do more that 1 activity?
Day 4 – La Fortuna – Arenal volcano – Hot springs afternoon/evening pass
Day 5 – La Fortuna – La Fortuna waterfall and Mistico Hanging bridges
Day 6 – Boat – Jeep – Boat to Monteverde – arrive afternoon. Staying at Koora Hotel. Activity for afternoon or stay at hotel and do Aguti trail.
Day 7 – Monteverde – Curi Cancha – OH interested in birdwatching so this is a must do. Cloud Forest in the afternoon.
Day 8 – Shared shuttle to Manuel Antonio – staying at Parador – arrive afternoon
Day 9 – Relax at hotel
Day 10 –Trip to Manuel Antonio NP – either book tickets or book tour
Day 11 – Relax at hotel
Day 12 – Relax at hotel
Day 13 – Relax at hotel
Day 14 – leave am for SJO airport
We did not hire a car and used shuttle’s so can’t comment on car hire. I would recommend booking activities in advance as we went over Easter and it was very busy.

How many are travelling ?
Costa Rica over December is pretty dry so no requirement to have a 4*4 unless you are planning on heading off track – I do prefer them for the height but I’m usually driving from San Jose to Puntarenas and then either going North to Tamarindo or South to Puerto Jimenez – all depends on the $$$
