Hi all – is there anyone who lives in the London Borough of Brent who managed to pay council tax by Amex?
The website says this:
You can also pay online at any time with a debit or credit card. We support all Visa and Mastercard branded cards but we do not accept:
Diners card
Discover
JCBand this:
You can pay your Council Tax at any:
PayPoint outlet: take your Council Tax bill to any shop showing the PayPoint symbol. The front of our Council Tax bill has the bar code that is used to process your payment. Payments must be in cash but there are no extra fees.
Post Office: pay by cash, cheque or debit card at any Post Office. Please remember to take your Council Tax bill with you.
Its interesting that the council has completely ignored the existence of Amex (either way) in their website.
Pls do let me know if there’s a way to do this via Amex (BAPP), even if convoluted. Thanks in advance.Do they accept PayPal?
Thank you for the quick reply. Sadly, no.
I’ve seen some discussions about paying via PayPoints at Co-op, but the council site says PayPoint payments must be in cash. I’m not sure if this is something each council restricts or PayPoint does it.I think the whole raison d’être of Paypoint is to allow you to pay bills with cash. But some Co-ops are happy to let you use a card. I can only suggest try paying your Council Tax bill with your Amex at a Co-op, and see what happens. Don’t ask. Just try it.
There is a limit of £200 on Council Tax transactions.
Brent does not accept Amex when paying them directly but the Post Office accepts Amex. So you could try presenting the council tax bill and then using your Amex.
No a chance of paying by Amex here in Lincoln, the CoOp doesn’t accept it. But I think it’s time to start paying for the year up front using my Avios Barclaycard.

In general, when the underlying provider doesn’t take Amex, the PO won’t either for those transactions, even if it takes Amex for PO products. In these sort of transactions, the PO simply acts as the bridge between council tax payer and council rather than taking the money into its own account and passing it on to the council. PayPoint is a very set up between customer, retailer and council.
Try Bluechain. They charge a small percentage of your payment amount though.

Just travel to a different part of the country where coop does accept Amex. London is a good example.
Now that would be doctorate level points collecting!!

Try other outlets. My local Texaco station accepts it at their paypoint terminal, max 200 per transaction but they’re happy to put through multiple 200s at a time
DP: I tried to pay my council tax bill via Amex today for the first time (have previously always used Barclaycard but need to hit my BAPP 241 target) but the guy behind the counter at the Esso in SW London I went to said they imposed a £50 limit on Paypoint transactions via card, as opposed to cash. I asked about doing multiple transactions of £50 but it was a no. Off to find a Co-op this weekend!
Have you tried PayPal? Sometimes businesses forget to disable the ability to pay via Amex, even if they don’t officially take it. I think this must be the case with my local council which probably wouldn’t envisage that anyone would even have an Amex, let alone want to use it to pay their council tax!
Can’t use Amex in Scotland for council tax. Say % card fee too high.

Anyone north of Bury with an Amex clearly has notions!

Not directly with council, but I can assure you switching to monthly payment card option and using a PayPoint store that accepts Amex does work.
My council also doesn’t use PayPal before NL suggests again – if only it was that simples!
@BWS, we have made some strides, you can even use it at Aldi and Lidl!
@freckles, it was also a general comment trying to be helpful – a lot of people don’t actually realise that you can still use the Paypal route even though the recipient doesn’t officially accept Amex. E.g., also works for Iceland supermarket online.I know @NorthernLass, it wasn’t meant as a criticism, if only my council was ‘forward thinking’ enough to allow such a ‘modern’ method of payment 😉😉
Their online system is so archaic, that even if I’m logged into my account and want to make a payment on my account it makes me input all my details manually!
I’m slightly surprised every year that our council still allows it!
@NorthernLass unfortunately my council doesn’t accept PayPal but I won’t let that deter me, plenty of Co-ops to try this weekend!

I’m confused. Are there lots of Coops in Germany, or is your username slightly inaccurate?
@Aston100 moved back to the UK almost two years ago – maybe it’s time I updated my username 😂
Update: I have just paid £200 of my CT bill on my BAPP at the Co-op on the Strand. The staff member processing it was very helpful, told me that there was a £200 limit per Paypoint transaction but when I asked if we could try multiple transactions she said no problem. First £200 went through fine but the second one was unauthorised. Tried a third time but still unauthorised – presumably that store has a £200 limit per either the CT bill or the specific card. Looking forward to a tour of London Co-ops this year!
Further update: I’ve since had a call from the fraud protection team at Amex (I called back to make sure it was legitimately Amex) and they blocked the second and third transactions as suspected fraud, so it was down to Amex not the Co-op. Good to know they are being vigilant I suppose!
My local Council is cunning. If you visit their website there is no mention of paying by anything other than direct debit or credit card (not Amex, Diners or JCB cards). Otherwise you need to call them! I tried Paypoint a couple of years ago with no success. It seems as if all Councils in North Surrey, apart from Croydon seem to be the same. When my daughter bought her flat just before Covid, she had a prepayment electricity meter. Eventually they came to change it, but unfortunately it was replaced with a Smart prepayment meter! However if she smiles nicely at the check out at a nearby Coop, she’s been able to top up with my Amex card. She’s always at the top of the highest amount allowed!
With our Council tax being almost 50% of Virgin card requirement for voucher and hers added in, I have no issues with Virgin voucher. It’s just a pity I can’t use Amex.
