Forums Payment cards American Express Council tax payment by Amex

  • 8 posts

As others have noted above, I’ve been able to pay my Council Tax using my Amex via the PayPoint method.

My council accepts online card payments with the 10-month billing option, but this is limited to Visa/MasterCard. They do accept Visa Checkout (which I believe accepts Amex, but block this card option).

For PayPoint payments, I had to specifically ask for a “council tax payment card” but can confirm this works at both Scotmid and Co-Op branches in Scotland. The limit is £200 per transaction, but all were knowledgeable to split transactions.

Great success paying my council tax at Coops in London – happy to do multiple £200 transactions as well!

If only I could use the same system to pay Thames Water or So Energy

Thames Water will send you a PayPoint payment card upon request.

Have been using this method for a few years to pay them the the local Co-Op.

Update: I have just paid £200 of my CT bill on my BAPP at the Co-op on the Strand. The staff member processing it was very helpful, told me that there was a £200 limit per Paypoint transaction but when I asked if we could try multiple transactions she said no problem. First £200 went through fine but the second one was unauthorised. Tried a third time but still unauthorised – presumably that store has a £200 limit per either the CT bill or the specific card. Looking forward to a tour of London Co-ops this year!

There is no need to pay for each £200 separately, this is what has triggered AMEX’s security.

The maximum £200 is per PayPoint scan not Co-Op, they can scan multiple times all on the same Co-Op transaction this then goes through as a single AMEX transaction in one go.

I always pay £1000 which they just scan the barcode 5 times.

Does this allow you to put a lump sum into your account (£500 say) or do you just use it in place of a DD to pay your monthly bill? I was on chat with their customer service who made it very much sound like the latter

Yes you can put whatever you want on, the only restriction is the PayPoint limit per transaction which I can’t remember just now. You can still do multiple scans as per the council tax.

My Thames Water account is always in credit a couple of hundred pounds plus for which they take the monthly payment.

You might have to cancel the DD too.

I’ve been under the impression that I wouldn’t be able to do this in my local borough, but considering how many of you are managing to do this I’m going to take a look – thanks for the tip!
