Forums Payment cards American Express Credit balance transfer between cards

  • 140 posts

I recently requested a credit balance on a closed card (from refunds from previous purchases) and the agent had to manually verify each merchant credit corresponded to some spend on the same card and they also requested a bank statement/proof of payment in order to process the balance back to my bank account. They COULD NOT transfer the credit balance to another one of my cards. They said policy changed back in March (?) but I didnt have any issue with a balance transfer request back in April.

Definitely the first time I’ve experienced this and it has been relatively straightforward in the past when opting for transferring balances on a closed card to an existing card – seems like Amex are tightening down on regulations – sources of payments etc

Yeah, it’s a real pain now, the CSA who did one for me a few weeks back took 37 minutes and multiple security checks for £60. Sometimes you need to upload documents too, even if you have same bank account active as a direct debit on another card. Transferring to another card used to be painless and took only a few minutes.

It’s about time Amex tightened up on its procedures which have hitherto been much too lax. This presents no issues for the vast majority of cardholders who aren’t constantly opening and closing accounts and creating additional and gratuitous CSA work and of course cost/lower service quality borne by loyal cardholders.

@JDB, I’ve been a loyal amex custoner since 2004 when I had a break, and many years before that. All my refunds except 2 or 3 have been necessitated by airlines, hotels and amazon, and were very rare before the pandemic.. Amex have never refused me a card, so I guess they are happy with my business.

Sometimes it depends on the CSA. I had some asking to refund to a bank account, others recently transferring refunded balances to another card.

Don’t understand your point. You say you only had a break in 2004, but in the original post said you had closed a card recently creating the refund issue.

Obviously my wife and I are very square, we just just have two BAPP, mine held since inception c. 20 years ago, my wife for c.15 years and two PRGs held for about eight years each and have never asked for a retention bonus because we don’t intend to cancel, so it would be wrong to do so. Equally we have no issues with customer service, receiving offer credits, refunds etc. My only criticism of Amex is that they pander to the disloyal and I very much hope they will gradually desist (and the signs are positive) because the cost to everyone else is increasingly unacceptable.

My point is that amex have never refused me cards so must be happy enough, and the cause of most of the refunds were third parties (mostly BA), not me.

Amex will happily open accounts for people with little or no income

@Carlos, true, they opened one for my mum as a pensioner and almosf life-long home maker with no credit record to speak of.

Ah, that explains things: the CSA for me was taking SO long I thought I’d lost the wifi connection!
Logged back in later – they couldn’t transfer the balance from a business to a personal card (only GBP90), but
would send it to my bank account within 10 business days.

Not sure what signs are positive here, especially with the upgrades bonuses floating about that encourage this churning behaviour. But I guess we thank you for your loyal unwavering membership so people like myself (and others on here) can gain some material benefit from “churning”.
