Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Curve foreign ATM withdrawals

  • 29 posts

Hi, please could anyone confirm if they’ve used their Avios Plus card via Curve to withdraw foreign currency from an ATM when overseas? If so has this been subject to a cash advance fee? I’m currently on holiday and have used up the curve foreign spend limit before fees are incurred so thought I’d withdraw some cash as I’ve not yet utilised that allowance.

Can’t speak for the two Avios cards, but the Hilton Honors Barclaycard doesn’t charge a fee for the withdrawal of foreign currency from an ATM when overseas.

From my experience they don’t treat it as a cash advance. But as ever ymmv.

I would still sign up and use a Chase Debit Card for ATM withdrawal abroad. I have use it in USA, Bulgaria and Italy faultlessly and with the added bonus of cash-back on spend as well.

Are you aware Curve increased their free FX limits to £1000 per rolling 30 day period and a special offer of no fees over the weekend? (Offer expires 31st Aug 22).

Yes, but thank you for flagging. It doesn’t seem to have kicked in yet as it’s still charging me a fee beyond the £500 limit.

I got an email on the 31st May and this was in the FAQ at the end:

When will these changes come into effect?

The changes outlaid will apply with immediate effect. If you’re unhappy with the changes we’ve made, and wish to close your account, please get in touch and we’ll take it from there.

I would query any fees under the new limit from then

Chase doesn’t give cash-back on cash withdrawals, but Barclays gives points when run through curve.

The marketing is working a little too well. Chase-mania is taking over HfP. The good news is that HfP readers are fairly fickle and when the 1% cashback ends, the Chase debit card will be introduced to the shredder and they’ll all be looking for the next new thing.
