Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Hi, I have 7 nights later this year in Da Nang, flying in from HKG and out to SIN.
Having never been to Da Nang hoping to benefit from H4P’s readers experience. Thinking 4 nights at the Intercontinental for the more relexed semi rural thing, then 3 Nights at the Hilton in town for more of the city ‘buzz’.
Any experience of hotels to share or advice to offer appreciated.
There’s a fair few topics discussing Vietnam and Da Nang specifically, so you may find some decent info from them.
I haven’t been pre covid, but I have stayed at the Hilton and I wouldn’t put you off it. I know the Ic is extremely highly thought of.
I have seen a few comments on people not loving it, but have you thought about staying in Hoi An and for a few days, as opposed to spending the week in Da Nang?
There seems to be an enormous price difference between the IC versus everything else in the Da Nang area.
I guess the IC can’t be compared with others due to the unique location.
Anyway, I’ve got both the Hilton and the HGI booked for May (will cancel one). I’ll feed back my experiences when the time comes.
We were in Vietnam 5 years back and the value you could get at hotels was phenomenal. I think someone mentioned a series of government tax breaks being offered which saw supply ramp up significantly.
I looked at the IC and discounted it fairly quickly because it was insanely expensive for the room configuration we needed. Instead we did our beach bit at the newly opened Angsana Lang Co which was incredible with a villa sleeping 5, private plunge pool on the roof and just loads of space. But don’t shy away from the independent hotels, either, as none of the other three places we stayed were part of chains, all were very good and you’re putting more back into the local economy, too.
We are going in March and had booked Banyan Tree. Then found out that Angsana and Banyan Tree share the grounds and Angsana was half the price! See level really with a private pool etc.
Angsana looks really good value.
Agoda seem to have a deal for the one bedroom seaview suite with private pool – about £170 a night in May.
Is Da Nang and Hoi An good to visit in August?
That part of Vietnam has a microclimate so in the summer, when it’s wet in the North & South, it’s supposed to be sheltered in the middle, at least by the coast. We spent 10 days in the region in August 2019 and only had one very light shower. I know one data point doesn’t count for much and weather patterns are becoming less predictable, but it worked for us.
The one downside with the Angsana was it was the only hotel we stayed at that used what could be described as Western pricing. The great example was beer vs coke. At most places they were cheap = say £1 a bottle – with the (local) beer slightly cheaper because it was just a markup on wholesale and coke was expensive. The Angsana however charged £2.50 for a coke and £5 for a beer, because they understood that’s what the market would bear – and you’re properly shut off in resort-land up there. There were no independent bars/restaurants etc.
And one thing I particularly liked about the Angsana was one night they had a street food takeover with the stalls run by students from a local catering college, which just seemed quite the decent thing to do.
We stayed at the Hyatt last year and thought it was great! Would recommend something closer to Hoi An than Danang, as we didn’t really find Danang itself that interesting (it serves more as a gateway/base for things in the area, such as Hoi An).
It depends what you are looking for . We were lucky to stay at the IC da nang on points and it was amazing. We did a tour / day trip to hoi ann (which resulted in a brilliant food guide recommendation for Hanoi)
