For all those experienced South American travellers, what sort of costs might we expect in Ecuador,Peru and Chile? Particularly thinking of incidentals/ coffee, beer, snacks and evening dining?
Happy enough to use curve linked to cc and Clarity, but do any folk recommend a pre loaded card or take local currency cash. Happy with USD but it’s not knowing what sort of cash buffer for the other 2 places.
Ecuador is USD and cash is mandatory for some things such as the Galapagos taxes otherwise whatever you prefer is accepted everywhere as far as I can remmeber. Chile I seem to remember going through a lot of pesos, but that could have been just the way I handled things. Depends if you’re in Santiago or more rural. The laundry in San Pedro de Atacama was cash only so was the border crossing/immigration fees.
Prices, Ecuador was cheaper than Chile, San Pedro was particularly pricy because it’s remote. ATMs are plentiful, so just draw what you need – Use the ATM Fee Saver app to see where and which ones are cheaper (and also what the limits are).
Can’t speak to Peru, as it’s been 8 years since I was there. I think preloaded cards are a biy pointless these days if you have Clarity and Curve(ugggh). Get a Wise card and you can use it for any currency, just transfer money from your current account to it.
I think you need to be clearer on what kind expenditure you are talking about. Peru has a massive variance in cost depending upon what you are in for. We spent about £1k at Central in Lima but we also ate in cheaper places. Over a mix of Chile and Peru in August last year, my data says we spent about $150 per day for two people including entrance fees to whatever, cocktails, fine dining here and there. That’s excluding that crazy expensive Central meal which I accounted for separately in my data.
All in all I didn’t find either Peru or Chile particularly cheap.
