On a cruise that has been diverted and have an unexpected day in Key West. Would prefer to avoid organised excursions. Anyone got any tips for a day there?

We’re in Key West for 5 days next month. I haven’t seen any hugely outstanding options for activities, but I’m planning to visit the Ernest Hemingway house (also a Bond location, which we collect, as well as the literary associations), and visit the slightly iconic marker showing the southernmost point of the continental US. There are a couple of decent but not spectacular beaches, apparently, if you fancy a flop day. There’s also a butterfly place and a Mel Fisher museum (we’ve been to another one in Florida which was interesting if you like maritime history).

Canoeing in the mangroves is fun.

If that’s not your thing, it’s a place where you can just hang out, eat and drink and walk around and see the sights, including Hemingway’s house.

I think https://www.trumanlittlewhitehouse.org/ is more interesting than Hemmingway’s house.

Although you won’t find any polydactyl cats there!

You must try conch fritters on the pier.

(ETA are you using the CruiseCritic forums?)

You could go to the East Martello museum and see Robert the Doll, he is haunted and the inspiration for Chucky, be sure to read the rules and ask his permission before you take a picture! The museum is actually an interesting history of the Keys and Key West too. There is also the Mel Fisher museum where a gold bar was stolen a few years ago because no one thought to lock it away! I think one of the original Ripleys Believe or Not museums is also there but it is a great place to just wander around, has a great atmosphere!

@NorthernLass – if you’re there for 5 days consider going out to the Dry Tortugas (there’s a flight if you’re feeling flush).

For a day in Key West, the thing we enjoyed the most was the cemetery (no, really).

Dry Tortugas look fantastic but I can’t really justify it with the current exchange rate, even on a boat!
We’ll definitely go to the Mel Fisher museum, the one in Sebastian was great fun – lots of Spanish shipwreck treasure.

Interesting that tickets for the Hemingway house are “at the gate” and “cash only”!

As a few folk have mentioned, if only there for a day, great to just wander about, food & drink, etc.

Quite a big gay scene if I remember correctly. A t-shirt slogan seen in a shop window stuck in my mind – “I’m so gay I fart rainbows”. Not sure how PC that is, as I don’t think there’s any biological reason why gay farts should be any nicer than straight farts.
