Hi All, appreciate this might be more suited to FT, but was wondering what HFP readers make of the daytime NYC-LHR? We want to use our 241s on the route and previously the night services have been uncomfortable give their brevity. Anyone recommend the daytimes instead? We don’t mind sacrificing a day as we can just relax in J, but my father suffers badly for jet lag so would like to reduce it as much as possible. TIA!
Yes, I recommend them. Have done BOS, NYC and YYZ (AC). I’m planning to do AA’s ORD-LHR soon.
The BA JFK and EWR day flights both leave at around 8AM. So that’s an early start to the day.
The AA flight usually leaves sometime between 10.00-10.30 ish so has a later arrival which may cause issues on arrival. But you won’t be e able to use AA with a 2-4-1.
I’ve done day flights from JFK and ORD to LHR both on AA. I still suffer from jet lag but it does seem to affect me less than an overnight.
Am usually home not long after midnight and in bed by 1 and usually get a good nights sleep and can than manage the next day without needing a nap which I end up having after an overnight
I’m assuming that LHR is your final destination so they are ideal for those who don’t have a long journey on arrival. For those like myself who are looking to connect to a regional flight not all of them arrive early enough (or are sometimes delayed) to do that and adding an overnight in London rather defeats the object. That said, I’ve done day flights from NYC, BOS, ORD and even PHL when US Airways offered it for a short period and, in terms of ease of journey, I prefer them to night flights.
another bonus from NYC is no traffic getting to the airport at that time
Thanks for the responses all – sounds like it’s a winner. We are 30 mins drive from LHR so the 8pm arrival is fine. We’re also staying with friends 20 mins from EWR for a couple of nights before leaving so early start is easy to EWR is fine. Thanks again, appreciate the responses.
We did the 7 am departure from BOS in April, yes it’s an early start but we were back in time to get the last shuttle up to MAN and decided that on the whole it was better than flying overnight (especially as BOS-LHR is only 5 1/2 hours!) I’d definitely do it again and probably settle for Y or PE, J was a bit of a waste tbh (especially as they hadn’t even loaded enough food 🙄).
We stayed at the Hilton BOS the night before so just had to walk to the terminal next door, security opened a short time after we got there!
Just a late follow-up to this – I am a lifetime fan of the BA238 home from BOS. As NorthernLass mentioned, if you can stay at the BOS Hilton, it’s such a painless experience in the morning (although the Hilton isn’t quite what it was – the loss of the Executive lounge was a blow, it was great to have breakfast in with amazing views of downtown Boston), E Terminal is very quiet, the lounge isn’t full to bursting (although no fizz at that time of the morning), the flight is rarely late, since the plane has overnighted there. The only downside in J is that the meal is breakfast, which you’ve probably already eaten, and I can probably count on the fingers of one finger flights where the second meal has been anything special. The odd time I’ve done it in F it’s been slightly better, but it’s such a short flight I generally just stick with J.
For my trip in a couple of weeks, I’m experimenting with BOS-JFK-LHR on AA. It’s a later departure, so I probably won’t get home until midnight, but the catering looks a lot better as a result.
I think I’d probably do it in Y next time, especially as this is now possible as a standalone booking for 25k avios plus £50 (someone asked if BA still offer this option, they do).
@Teece, what time do you get to security for this flight? We presented ourselves at 4 am for the 7 am departure and it wasn’t even open! How much time realistically do you need?
Catering on the AA JFK-LHR day flight is a full lunch (though served early) rather then breakfast
Making the assumption you’re in Bosiness on Tuesday it was starter + salad, thenmain (choice of beef, fish, chicken, vege – and allavailable for pre selection) plus dessert and served as separate courses!

5.30 at the absolute earliest. Note that the fast-track channel is not policed in any way, so if you accidentally end up in it even if you’re flying Y, you’ll be fine!

What was the second service? And any ice-cream?
Thanks – they didn’t even open the Fast Track channel the morning we were there! Extra hour in bed next time then 😂
