Forums Payment cards American Express Declined for Platinum Amex?

Anyway, the BAPP arrived this morning with a £1900 limit. I’d happily reduce my other card down further if i could guarantee the increase on my BAPP but i dont think it works like that.

As you have the bapp it’s easy for customer service to transfer limits between the two

I applied last week for the Amex BAPP card and was declined outright online for the first time ever. I have been automatically referred several times in the past but not this time. I appealed on the basis that I could reduce the £30k limit on my other Amex card. Amex duly said if I reduce it by £8k they’d review the BAPP application but it is not a guarantee that i will be accepted still.

I had a reasonable limit on my Gold card (my first card), and a substantial limit on my ARCC (which I took with the view to cancelling my Gold). In the end I kept the Gold, and had them re-allocate my limit on chat (think it required them to put the request in, and it was approved within 24 hours, as I could see the new limits on the app the next time I logged in. Can’t remember if they said there was a time limit on how often you could do it.

I took the BAPP during the 70k offer, and only got £4800. Won’t go over it, but certainly got close to 40% utilisation on occasion. Might go on chat now actually and ask to re-allocate some more

My BAPP limit is just north of 10K. Is it a move to reduce the limit to say 5K before applying for a 2nd AMEX card – or that’s just superstitious at this point? Heard that too on the Forum before that stuff like this can make it easier..

I remember it being very easy to transfer limits between my Amex cards.

I was told at the time (late 2021) that this can only be done once every three months.

You said you only got the bapp card in feb? If so I don’t think reducing the limit so soon looks too clever tbh. It’s not such an issue when you have had the card for longer

Update on this: Just been on chat and credit re-allocated again successfully, will show on app in 1-2 days

Correct. OK – noted. There can be some good / bad and false advice circulating here and as I am still relatively new to AMEX I’d rather answer, verify and check any questions I’d have than act upon them – sorry for the spam. Done for now with them! 😀

one thing to consider is that its better to not rush applications fearing you are going to miss out…this enhanced bonus on the amex plat has happened before and id be pretty confident it will happen again…my partner applied for the bapp in jan (70k) and we are both eligible for the amex plat atm, but only I will apply now and hope it returns in the future for her as I mentioned. if you have a partner and can space out the applications across the different amex cards/barclaycards/hsbc etc there is enough to choose from to not need to rush it. just my opinion of course 🙂

Yeah, that’s true. I think I said it here to someone or on another discussion (can’t remember anymore 😀 ) but P2 will be doing the Barclays 50K now, so she’ll not be able to do a Plat application as her timeframe is even tighter. So I’ll probs bite the bullet and try – not too much to lose, just will not try anything until 2024 if anything does go sideways!

‘So soon’ only applies to new borrowing. Reducing credit is advisable to be done as early as possible.
A large credit limit relative to income is a negative to your credit profile, so the sooner it can be reduced, the better.

It does make it better for your credit profile, but after reducing, leave atleast a month or two for the data to be reported to credit databases, before applying for another card.

This is another reason why limit has to be reduced early.

Absolutely, in isolation it may not be an automatic decline but when combined with a few other flags it definitely isn’t something you want on your file.

And there goes my plan to apply for my first amex card.

So while i’ve not received official confirmation from AMEX i’ve just got an email from Priority Pass and AMEX notifications signup that would suggest the manual approval of my application worked. So it appears there maybe issues with the address info being correctly used in some apps.

I tried to apply today and was rejected on the basis of my income (apparently). I called them up but the agent just said I didn’t meet the criteria other than asking to confirm my income. If I tried again with another agent do you think they’d tell me what I need to review? I can’t increase my salary obviously but can AMEX lower my BAPP limit on the phone and then reprocess my application or something?

You can lower your own BAPP limit in your account if you want to try that.

If I were to do this do you know if they would see it immediately on the phone or would it have to reflect on my credit report?

They would see it immediately if you call them.
However if you submit an application online, that could be processed based on old data.

Phone up and ask for manual reconsideration of your application on the basis that you will divide your BAPP’s current credit limit across the existing and applied-for cards. Amex may initially say they won’t or don’t do this, but I have several data points that evidence that they do (e.g., I myself did this in January, family member did it last year, etc.), so I would firmly, but politely insist on this (or HUACA).

I called up again and asked and the answer was still no. They said I can send them my last three months of payslips but I’m not sure I can be bothered with the faff.

I was declined for Platinum last week. Relatively high income, no mortgage, Amex customer for 10 years with no churning (held BA card all that time and a Gold Card for about 5 years before cancelling a few years ago).

I phoned to enquire why I was declined and the agent said they would request a manual review. Over the weekend I halved the credit limit on my BA card, as it was fairly high (about 1/3 of income).

Anyway, this morning I received a welcome email from Priority Pass and from Amex Online Services so I’m assuming that the manual review worked.

I don’t know whether the credit limit was the problem. I did mention to the agent that I was happy to reduce it.

It’s a bit bonkers – Amex gives out these high credit limits (I certainly never use anything like the £10 – £20k I’ve had on various cards) then they turn you down for another card because you’ve got a very high limit on another of their cards, which they gave you in the first place, you don’t use and always pay off promptly!

Yes. I did mention to the agent last week that if the problem was credit limits then it was for exactly the reason you state.

I made sure that I ticked the box for the platinum to check with me before increasing the limit.

I was declined but will review it after I spoke to them.
If they accept, what happens to the bonus if I was referred to this card? and will I get the higher amount, 65k for being referred?

Had my app declined today too.. so called them up and asked what do I need to do to qualify? (I was shocked I was declined. I have 3 other Amex cards all run smoothly.. good credit limits and well managed accounts. I suggested I would close some if they wanted but not my BAPP. Operator said will email decision makes and see what they say will suffice… hoe they don’t take too long I want the 60k promo offer…. fingers crossed. Anyone else done this, what have they said?

Interesting to read comments here. AmEx card holder for over 15 years (think a couple of different cards in that time) with a £10kish credit limit that I’d only get close to for a one-off large purchase, always paid off in full, got 9/10 on the soft check, no debts or bad credit, no mortgage, average personal income but high household income. Not applied for any other credit for years. Declined with no reason given and haven’t received any email confirming/explaining this as others reported. I was a bit confused by the “how long have you been with your bank?” question as I have several bank accounts so had no idea which one they meant and just picked the main one I use. Sounds as though it may be worth calling them to find out why?
