Last year I transferred about 50,000 Amex MR into Delta SkyMiles to book some SkyTeam flights (before VA joined SkyTeam). I then cancelled the flights and the points were refunded back to my SkyMiles account.

However I’m now stuck with what to do with these points. I have no intention on flying to the USA in the foreseeable, nor booking any other SkyTeam flights (these are cheaper when booked with VA FC miles anyway!).

Does anyone have any idea how I could gain value from these miles?

I tried using them on Delta Vacations to book a hotel and although it seemed possible, the booking failed on the final page where it wanted a USA or Canada address for ticket delivery and credit card submission!

Quick update on this – I managed to find a home for my miles in the end, by booking business class back from Da Nang to LCY (via Tapei) with China Airlines for 80,000 Delta Skymiles + £40.

The key for my getting value when redeeming DL Skymiles for flights is to redeem them on Skyteam airlines such as China Airlines, Vietnam, Garuda and other Skyteam airlines that aren’t so closely integrated with DL and AF/KL.

I moved amex points to Delta and booked flights to SYD. I was supposed to fly China airlines but they repeatedly cancelled the TPE SYD sector post ticket issue, Delta therefore rebooked onto their LHR LAX SYD service and this link will take you to a trips report.
