@BWS How much hand baggage do you have? Or do you not put baggage in the hold? I have a rucksack as my hand baggage and usually find space above my seat. Or use the space under the empty middle seat which is one of the reasons I like BA CE. Also helps that I am usually travelling as a couple so we are likely to have access to that seat. I hardly ever choose row 1 of CE for that reason and also because the crew often keep things in the row 1 overhead lockers. I also occasionally put my bag in the locker on the opposite side of the aisle as it is easier to keep an eye on it.

That’a another thing. No rucksacks allowed in the overhead bins. It’s 1 trolley/larger bag plus hand item or rucksack underneath the seat. Your rucksack does not equal trolley/larger bag, so should always go underneath the seat. If there is space once everyone has boarded then you can put it up.

This group 1-3 A4 sized sign at the boarding gate gives free licence to a third of the plane (or more) to queue up clogging up the boarding gate.

A BIG electronic sign saying Group 1 only once boarding commences changing to Groups 1 & 2 and then onto 1,2 & 3 will throttle back the stampede somewhat. Other Groups can be fed into the line as it moves onto the plane.

Preboarders needing extra time/help and those with kids (under 5) could be tannoyed as usual.

Saw this system in Dubai and Taipei recently, didn’t help. I think literally ‘computer says no’ type of system with loud error sound is needed.

@meta I strongly disagree that my rucksack does not equal trolley/larger bag, especially if I have checked my suitcase in so that it’s in the hold. Also as a passenger in CE why should I not be able to use the overhead locker just so that others can? Hand baggage is hand baggage.

Agree. AJA, you can sit at my table at the HfP party 🙂

A rucksack you say? Not a backpack?

I agree with all your tips and also long ago abandoned row 1 for such reasons. I generally have a backpack that sits on top of a Tumi rolling briefcase underseater. Backpack is quite rigidly built and goes overhead; the underseater wheeled case goes under the empty middle seat. Sometimes i take a full size cabin case in which case the backpack and case go overhead and I sit with earphones in and eyes closed to avoid answering “Whose bag is this? Can this not go under a seat?” Answer: No it can’t. It was very expensive and I’m not mashing it!

I actually mean a backpack. I use the two words interchangeably. I didn’t realise a rucksack was distinct from a backpack although I have discovred today that a rucksack is a specific backpack most often used for hiking or camping.

Hang on, what are we defining as a rucksack and what is a backpack?

    For me, this is rucksack:

    And this is backpack:

Besides BA, other major European airlines (AF, LH group) offer 2 cabin cases plus a personal item in the J cabin on short haul. As such I would see it as an entitlement to store both my cabin case and my backpack overhead if I wished. This tallies with AJA’s view that he/she should not be disadvantaged because his chosen cabin luggage is soft sided.

I thought BA only offers 2 hand luggage and no personal item.

I was thinking about ET. In Club there should be less restrictions as no one besides passengers in Club should be allowed to use the overhead bins.

@AJA same here, I use it interchangeably, but as @BWS just pointed out these are two different items.

I would prefer it if everyone else on board gave the late pax a slow clap welcome.

Lol’ing at this. Almost as if it could be recorded and a button pressed by the crew, a bit like the trumpet music that played when one used to land “on time” with Ryanair.

@meta OK. Still not sure I agree with you but I am lucky enough not to have had the displeasure of sitting in ET since 2009 so have almost no experience of the bunfight back there. But am totally with you (and BWS) re CE lockers only being for CE pax.

I thought this was the case too. Currently thinking about how I bring my wedding dress, veil and all other stuff with me to OPO in only 2 hand luggages for my wedding later this summer. I am travelling out alone, so can’t outsource the help and I know how judgemental folk are about having more than the allowance, even if in CE !!

@BWS My backpack is more like the Samsonite option rather than the Cotswold item which should go in the hold as far as I am concerned! Especially if you are sitting in CE – not sure why you’d even have one if you travel in that cabin? Hope to see you (and Meta) at the do. 🙂

@redlilly, have you checked the max dimensions of the BA cabin bag – it’s massive?! You can buy an exact-sized one from Amazon. Though I can’t say I’ve ever had my hand luggage size or weight checked on BA. EasyJet also adopted this size recently but I don’t think many people have realised this as I was getting some very hostile looks on our way home from GIB in April!

So you can have a 56 x 45 x 25 cabin case plus a backpack/rucksack. I quite often pop a small handbag into my backpack if I’m going to need something daintier at the destination.

Exactly, rucksacks are for those who do worthy things like disembark in ZRH to go hillwalking.

BA is 1 cabin case and 1 personal item, in both J and Y IIRC.

    BA’s cabin bag rules are

    For Adults 1 handbag/laptop bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 40 x 30 x 15cm / 16 x 12 x 6in) plus 1 additional cabin bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 56 x 45 x 25cm / 22 x 18 x 10in)

    Infants (under 2) 1 cabin bag for items required during the flight (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 56 x 45 x 25cm / 22 x 18 x 10in)

Yes! I have 2no. Briggs and Riley two wheeler cases that broadly match those sizes, and have been a lifeline over the years. I am just doing the usual panic… wanting to carry the dress instead of folding it in to a suitcase and then worrying about everything else I’ll “need” with me in the cabin. I’ll probably just tell myself to get over it end up checking in a bag, and carrying the dress with me on board.

Good idea on the small bag going in to the bigger one.

I personally don’t mind if people bring a slightly larger allowance, as those rucksacks that everyone has a problem with (e.g. duffel bags) can sometimes be squeezed in to the section under the seat. I am small, so happy to do this as it doesn’t affect my leg room. It’s those people that take the p* * * that are the problem.

Lols, this is literally going to be me in 2 weeks time. Heading to ZRH to watch Coldplay and then do some hill walking after. Carrying my North Face duffel on board, which just fits inside the size allowance, and sitting in CE.

OH is coming in to ZRH, in First with work, from SEA on the same day with a similar duffel rucksack.

We definitely still “backpack” and sit in the “better” cabins!

    a) congrats!

I too have never understood why boarding first is seen as a status perk, especially for long-haul where cabin baggage space isn’t really an issue. Why do people get irate about this. You have a seat reserved for you! Basically it’s a punishment to sit in a metal tube for longer than you have to; even in the posh seats. Literally last person on the plane is my perfect boarding position.

Anyway, as we’re in the realms of fantasy; easy solution:

    – Overhead storage completely redesigned as a locker/slot system
    – Each seat has an assigned space/slot for luggage that will fit one correctly sized and shaped peice of luggage.
    – This size is internationally mandated and universal to all airlines; maybe with a slightly larger international standard for less dense premium cabins.
    – If carry on has to be smaller so everyone gets a slot – well, tough, learn to pack more efficiently 😀
    – If your bag doesn’t fit or you put it in someone else’s slot them it gets tossed in the hold, no debate – it just disappears (or a woodchipper if you want to make compliance better). Unlucky.
    – With a guaranteed luggage slot then who cares about getting on first, especially on short-haul?
    – Idiots, that’s who. Let them get on with it. Everyone else can chill out.
    – Saunter on in your own time once the rush has abated – preferably at last call. Stick case in your assigned slot. Sit down and away you go.

Where do I collect my giant consultancy fee from?

Haha, I have fantasised about an assigned locker system more than once while sitting on a plane, facing forwards but aware of a growing noise of unhappiness over overhead space behind me. It would be an utter dream in terms of relaxation before take off.

That would clearly be the ultimate … and I am sure would provide many laughs at the passport counter on the way through OPO airport.

I do agree with the differences, but then “backpacking” is defined by the larger version. People don’t go “rucksacking”.

I actually thought “backpack” was what Americans call a rucksack (though Dora the Explorer did have a rather small one. I know she is Mexican but it’s very Americanised). Also, isn’t rucksack German for, literally, “back pack”?

And presumably, if you’re really hard, you have a “Bergen” like all aspiring special forces types!
