Forums Payment cards American Express Disappearing payments when clearing Amex account?

  • 38 posts

Last night I made a payment to my card (as a ‘faster payment’ from my current account) and around 30 minutes later, my balance showed as £0.

This morning, I’ve woken to find the balance is back to being £676 in debit, although the payment is clearly reflected in my available credit.

Ordinarily, the payments show up within minutes and remain in the account as you’d expect. However in my 8 years with Amex this is probably the fifth time this has occurred. And every time it happens, I speak with Amex customer services and they talk to me as if I’m a liar. They keep spouting cr•p about how the payment will depend on how long it takes for MY bank to send the payment to them … they cannot seem to comprehend that they’d already shown the payment then it disappeared!

Has anyone else ever suffered with the incredible disappearing Amex payments?

I’ve had this a couple of times when paying at the weekend but it normally corrects itself after a day.

I recently had the opposite … Amex sent me an email confirming receipt of my direct debit amount last month, although the date fell on a Christmas/New Year Bank Holiday and my cheque acct balance didn’t show any deduction. To its credit, the email did say that the amount would transfer out of my bank account up to 3 business days later, but for 8 complete days it looked like I had almost £2k credit in two places, both my Amex CCard and my bank account.

It finally rectified itself by yesterday morning. I suspect there’s not much that any Amex CS agent can do when transfers like these are at the mercy of banks’ overnight clearing processes, which must have accumulated a considerable backlog being dormant for four full end-of-month days from 25 to 28 Dec.

I know yours was a Fastpayment transfer, not a DD, but I suspect it fell victim to the same backlog. I’d give it 48-72 hours before querying, and always take a screenshot of successful Amex receipt.

Amex shows the DD in your amex account when they submit the DD, even if it takes another few days to actually debit. I once had the DD fail, amex only “debited” the payment back after a week.

Does the FP problem not fix itself after a few days…

I have a deja vu about this thread. I’m sure someone posted something similar last Christmas

Does the FP problem not fix itself after a few days…

On the occasions this has happened, it either fixes itself later in the day in question. or at the latest overnight that night. Amex are extremely annoying mind as when you contact them, they keep playing the same broken record about 24-48 hours for the payment to be processed, almost ignoring the fact you’ve told them it already showed up then disappeared!

Bizarrely, this afternoon I decided to see if I could force their system to update so made another payment of £100 into my account. 9 minutes later, I got a notification confirming receipt of the funds and voila, not only was the £100 payment showing up from this afternoon, but also the payment I made last night.

My account is now £100 in credit but TBH I’d rather have that – the only reason I have my Amex card is to accrue the Avios as I hate owing anything. I tend to pay my account off as soon as I receive the statement, and sometimes mid-month too if the balance is getting anywhere near £1,000 …
