Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Do one person’s status benefits extend to everyone on a booking?

Rather unexpectedly, my wife will qualify for Bronze status in a week or so due to a business trip.
The whole family are booked on some flights over the summer in economy – will my wife’s status benefits extend to everyone on the later bookings i.e. will we be able to use the business class check-in and choose seats 7 days in advance?

I currently have bronze and recently took a trip with my mum who is blue. I booked everything from my BA account i.e. lead traveller:
    1. I booked BIZ class for both of us so can’t answer the first question as we both qualified for BIZ check-in
    2. The system allowed me to choose seats for the both of us 7 days in advance
    3. On one leg of our journey we redeemed points for Alaska Airlines, I booked for the two of us together. Our check-ins were linked, but I noticed on the boarding pass we had different boarding group, so my status did not carry over to her.

    Hope this helps.

You will be able to select seats seven days in advance for everyone on the same booking/PNR as the Bronze cardholder, but not others even if on the same flight. Not sure if this works the same way re check in desks.

Easily checked on the BA bronze page

If they are on the same booking then yes the benefits transfer over.

Keep in mind the boarding group doesn’t always update for everyone in the same booking if one person has status. As long as you’re on the same booking and board together you’ll be able to board with the highest status member’s group.

What if the one person in the booking that has Bronze status is a 4 year old? Is there any sort of age limit?

Because of the differences in our membership dates, I think our son will qualify for Bronze status next month after our outbound travel, but my wife and I won’t even though he doesn’t fly anywhere without us…

Congratulations to your wife on her Bronze status, and by extension to your whole family, who should find it very useful.

I have had the equivalent to BA Silver for many years, although I had the equivalent to BA Bronze before that and my husband has never had status. We have quite a lot of experience with travel on both the same bookings and on separate bookings, because we sometimes pay for my flights (to maintain my status for the benefit of both of us) and use avios / other miles for my husband’s. We often travel in economy, so status benefits really help, although if we can get business or first award flights for my husband we’ll almost always take them.

When we are on the same booking, my husband gets all the same benefits as I do for seat assignments, business check-in, luggage etc. He gets lounge access as my guest if necessary (although Bronze won’t help with that). Depending on the circumstances and airline, his boarding pass may show a different boarding group to mine, but we have always been allowed to board together. I don’t see any reason all this would not apply to BA Bronze also, with the obvious proviso of waiting until 7 days before to choose seats.

When we are on separate bookings, choosing seats depends on the airline. BA only lets me choose mine. Qantas, American and Alaska will always let us choose both if I call them. AA gives us both priority seats and Qantas will sometimes unblock seats as well. We have always been able to use business check-in together and also board together. I can only remember a single exception re boarding for a crowded BA short-haul economy flight with separate bookings but they were very easily talked out of that. I could imagine BA making an occasional exception for boarding if you have Bronze rather than Silver, but again they may not be too insistent, and you should certainly always be able to use priority check-in together.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.
Will be interesting to see what happens come summer time.

No problem with that. Some children can guest their parent(s) into lounges even though they wouldn’t be allowed to enter on their own.

Some quirky rules, but don’t mind when they work out in your favour!

This makes your child sound like the lead character in The Boss Baby 😀

A quick question related to this.

I’m booking using a 241 voucher on my account but my status has lapsed, my partner on the booking has silver. As the booking is made by me (without status) will both of us receive the silver benefits re booking seats etc? Assuming so as wording just says ‘everyone on the booking’ and no mention that the person with status must have made the booking (such as the kid with status above!).

Yes, everyone on the booking gets the benefits of the passenger with the highest status. I think possibly seat selection might have to be booked through your partner’s account after you book as they’re the Silver member but this shouldn’t be an issue.
