Forums Other Destination advice Domestic flights SYD-MEL connecting from BA15

We are flying into SYD on BA 15 and rather that spend any time there at the beginning of the trip as well as at the end we intend flying on to MEL later in the morning.

I know that even if flying QF onwards we need to collect our luggage and check in again as well as change to the domestic terminal and the advantage would be that we can use Avios to book but the reviews of the 737 on this route are not good. Has anyone flown Jetstar or one of the other budget airlines?

Also what is the lounge situation in the Domestic terminals. I recall on previous trips that the QF lounge was good but what about Priority Pass lounges if we choose another lounge?

Not a fan of Jetstar. I’d probably stick with Qantas, but if not then go with Rex, the challenger airline in Aussie aviation, who include a meal, seat selection and baggage as standard. They fly from T2 (same as Virgin Australia) and have their own lounge, which is also used by Priority Pass, though it’s nothing special. That’s the only domestic lounge accessible with PP through Amex.

For a one hour flight it shouldn’t really matter too much on airline. I’d go for price/Avios options.

Qantas lounges are good, but also depends what your expectations are I guess. It is a domestic lounge not an international lounge.

Plenty of PP restaurants in all Aussie airports if you have access to the credit.

Like @louie I’d stick with Qantas rather than Jetstar, especially after a long haul flight. Qantas flights are frequent on the SYD-MEL route and the planes themselves are fine. Domestic Qantas flights can be a good use of avios, whether in business or economy.

The Qantas Club lounge is OK and would be available if you are BA Silver / Oneworld Sapphire, or the Qantas Business lounge if you fly business or are BA Gold / Oneworld Emerald. Note that in the specific case of Sydney the Business lounge is only marginably better than the Qantas Club – Brisbane and Melbourne, for instance, are better.

One other thing. You don’t say if you are looking at economy or business. If business, then Qantas is a real treat for people used to flying short haul business in Europe. None of this economy seat with a moveable curtain nonsense. Though if you have just come off BA15 you’ll already have had your brekkie and might not get as much out of it as at other times.

Another positive for Qantas is that you can drop your baggage off at the international terminal and get an airside Qantas bus transfer to T3. Easier than hauling your bags to T2 for Jetstar, Rex or Virgin. Though I still have a soft spot for Rex!
