Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Downgraded at boarding gate

  • 51 posts

At the end of my tether with BA. Flying Belfast via LHR to Vienna. Downgraded from club Europe to economy on out Belfast to London flight. Then boarding our flight (which is 2.5 hrs delayed) from LHR to Vienna to be told that one of us has to downgraded to economy. What are we entitled to in terms of compensation? Flight had been booked belfast- Vienna with a Barclays upgrade and avios. This is my 4th issue with BA in 3 months.

How does the 30% work when a voucher has been used?

Indeed there is not much you can do (legally). You get a small % back only (thankfully it is just a short flight). I would at least try to get the original Avios and TP points.

I recently had a slightly different issue: IB economy flight, upgraded at check in to business, then at boarding downgraded to economy again (change of plane). In this case IB refunded the upgrade cost fully. Technically I could have requested the 30% of the total cost but it was exactly the same in £.

We used an upgrade voucher and only 1 out of our 4 flights were actually upgraded. Are we entitled to the voucher back???

If you refuse a downgrade, does the airline have duty of care until they can put you in your booked class?

It seems that youd always lose out on a shorthaul downgrade? DUB-LHR economy for example is 4750 avios + 17.5, business is 8500 + 25.

If you get downgraded and only get 30% back, does that not mean youd be paying about 6000 avios and ~17.5 for whats now an economy ticket, which is more than the cost of an economy ticket?

Cash ticket LHR to AMS, business 239, econ 88, 30% downgrade means your economy ticket is now costing around 160?

Belfast-London 30%, but Vienna is I believe in higher band so 50%.

You can request a re-route in the original booking class. You don’t have to accept a downgrade.

You get 30/50/75% of what you originally paid.

I want to know – how do they select which passengers to downgrade – is it check in early and get more guarantees, is it seat number dependent, BA status dependent, short straw draw, or do they simply select the people that look the most compliant and look like they won’t ‘kick off’?

It’s determined by an algorithm so check in & gate staff can’t do anything about it. Status, having a seat selected & checking in as early as possible are criteria you can control. Other factors include connecting passengers being prioritised.

You don’t actually have the right to insist on a reroute or seat on a later service (with or without duty of care) but you can always ask.

In line with ADR rulings on that scenario it should be treated as though you paid full miles for the upgraded class of travel. You are entitled to 30% back of the miles for the three downgraded person-sectors on that basis, though you won’t get the voucher as well. As it was a Barclays voucher booking don’t forget to price off the 50p RFS rate for a one way booking.

Is this the first case of someone being downgraded while using the Barclaycard voucher? That didn’t take long! I’d love to hear what Barclays have to say about that …
