Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Downgraded Avios J class Ticket

  • 4 posts

Traveling with my wife on an avios J class tickets from Athens to UK. The flight was overbooked so I was downgraded to Y. On enquiring with ground staff why me, I was informed that an avios J class ticket is the lowest revenue ticket so the first to be offloaded/downgraded.
Is this a common occurence on avios tickets?

To make matters worse 10 months after the flight still not been refund the difference in fare/points.

It sometimes happens but not very often, I think you’ve just been unlucky on this occasion.

Did you submit a claim to BA? You are actually entitled to specific compensation under UK261 rules (lots of threads on here about this), although with short-haul journeys, sometimes the difference in price is a better option.

Yes I was lucky enough to receive £30 compensation!

IIRC downgrade reimbursement on a short haul flight is 30% of the fare paid for that leg but you need to claim on.

BA don’t just pay it out.

It’s not a common occurrence but when flights are overbooked, Avios non status passengers are at greater risk than others to be offloaded or downgraded. By way of compensation for the downgrade, you are entitled to a 50% refund of the Avios paid and 50% of the cash element, the latter calculated after any actual disbursements. If the difference between the classes gives a higher result which it shouldn’t here, you can ask for the difference. You need to chase BA – they won’t volunteer anything!

Can you clarify exactly what you claimed for and how? If you submitted a claim to BA and they valued the downgrade compensation at £30 (though this sounds a bit on the low side), they won’t give you back the difference between what you paid and what you got on top of that. Were you told at any point that the difference would be refunded?

I made a complaint to BA customer services, and was informed that they are only required to pay £30 as compensation.
