Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Downgrading – DragonPass access?

  • 6 posts

I’m looking to downgrade to the free Avios card but I’ve not seen this covered anywhere: do I get to still keep and use the four lounge passes in the DragonPass app or will those disappear once I do?

In my “changes in benefits” summary obviously this option is not present in the free card.

You lose DragonPass access when you downgrade; people have reported it is more or less immediate.

Got it thanks, tempted to get amex gold then to grab those passes.

This was really helpful – was about to downgrade my card (as OH signed up for 50k extra Avios a couple of months ago). Have 3 (out of 4 free visits – don’t remember how I got this) lounge passes booked for early September so better wait. Let’s hope the 2 x £20 is worth it! Thanks

If I get a supplementary card for my wife, does she get DragonPass access too?

No, only the primary cardholder gets the Cabin Upgrade voucher and DragonPass lounge benefit.

    Thanks, I assumed as much.
Another question along the same lines:
If I change my Premier Account from single to joint, will the related rewards be given to each person?

You join Avios Rewards as an individual, rather than for the account and in the case of a joint account, only one of you can join. Equally, if you have more than one account, you can only have Avios Rewards on one of them.

That is a shame, thanks for clarifying

But obviously if i spend as an additional card holder on OH’s account, this works toward the 10k Voucher and 3 months initial bonus’ goals, right?
Also, is the period for the £3,000 spend in 3months 50k initial bonus calculated from card application approval date or from actual card activation? Thanks!

    1. Yes additional cardholder’s spending counts for both.
    2. From card approval.

    HI Gary, thanks, very inconvenient.

Anyone know if there is a chance to ask for extension due to KYC procedures not completed successfully and quickly?

Update on the above, my final pass of 4 “free” passes was finally removed from my DragonPass this week having downgraded from Avios plus at the end of December 2023 and closing Premier current account in February 2024.

We have a premier NatWest reward account from single to joint and that gave us both dragon Passes.

@Tracey – I’m not sure how the passes work with NatWest, but to get the four free passes from Barclays, you need to be on Dual Rewards which I think effectively means only one person can get them.

NatWest dragon pass gives unlimited lounge access. Make the account a joint account and you both get a dragon pass.

Huh – this is interesting! Seems to contradict what was said at the top of this thread.

I called Barclays and asked the same question i.e. if I downgrade, do I keep the 4 free lounge access passes? They didn’t know. Do you still have access to your Dragonpass+ then? I thought it was set up so that one loses access to Dragonpass+ when one downgrades from the prem card to the basic card. But it sounds like even if your free pass has been removed, you still have access to your Dragonpass+ to be able to see that? So you can still pay £18.50 for entry, and pre-book for £5?

To get the four free passes you need to have both the Avios Plus credit card and the Avios Rewards current account. If you either downgrade the card or switch off Avios Rewards but keep the other you would keep the Dragonpass account but lose any unused free passes, normally pretty immediately.

If anything else slips through the net, as Sudz74 has suggested, don’t shout about it.

Putting aside what slips through the net, is there any formal confirmation what happens to any passes that you may still have that were bought at £18.50 (not the 4 free passes) when one downgrades the Plus card to the basic Avios credit card whilst still maintaining the Premier account.

Yes, in the terms para 4.5 says that any purchased passes will be cancelled and refunded once you cease to be eligible, subject to any cancellation charges that might apply.
