Forums Payment cards American Express Downgrading from Amex Gold charge card

  • 23 posts

I’ve just passed my 2nd year anniversary with the Preferred Rewards gold card and received my bonus membership reward points so am considering ditching the gold card to start the two year clock before applying again. (Probably applying for the BAPP which I haven’t held for a couple of years).

Which card do people downgrade to in order to keep their Membership Rewards points balance? And does that mean the two year clock starts on applying for a Membership Rewards card with bonus points again? Or does keeping any kind of Membership Rewards card mean the clock hasn’t started? If that makes sense!

If you want to keep your MR then you’ll need something like an ARCC.
However, this will prevent the clock starting.
If you want to start the clock, then you’ll need to get rid of any MR specific card, so you’ll need to find a suitable transfer partner.
Theres a 30% bonus on transfers to Hilton right now.

Hmmmm! Thanks both. I don’t have any trips planned at the moment but may just transfer to Avios and then cancel. Thanks for the replies.

It’s worth calling them. It’s possible you could downgrade to green (even though it’s off sale), as you were able to dowbgrade to gold charge card when it had been taken off sale.

Thanks @points_worrier. Would that count as a Membership Rewards card though? I.e. would it mean the two year clock didn’t start?

Besides the issue of being a charge card, also not that downgrades are no longer “guaranteed”, they have to be offered in your account.
