Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Easyjet flight cancelled at gate. Insurance claim for rerouting

First time this has happened to me last minute. And I’ve hurriedly been learing this. So any guidance from experienced travellers would be helpful. We are 5x members of same family and lucky to be covered by both HSBC Premier travel insurance. And Amex Platinum travel insurance.

I understand that the travel insurance is supposed to cover the unrecoverable costs with the airline. So you don’t get a double benefit.

Our return flight to MAN was scheduled to leave at around 10pm and was cancelled while we were at the gate. This was not weather related so I know we are covered under eu261.

There were no easyjet flights from same airport for 3 more days and we we were being coaxed into rebooking on an easyjet flight via manage my booking either from another airport or to another destination or wait the 2 days before the next direct flight.

Travelliing with 3 kids its not ideal to move airports with all the associated headaches. Ive booked some next day flights to MAN from same airport but with KLM for around £1400

We booked an airport hotel 2x rooms around £370.

We got into hotel at 11:30pm so didn’t eat / drink anything.

I expect our airport parking will be a penalty to pay.

Given the airline has responsible to refund the flights or cover costs of rerouting. (Arguing Rerouting costs using KLM Not likely quick or easy to argue with Easyjet).

Is my best bet to raise the travel insurance claim. Under travel disruption section for the new paid for flights and hotel. And say that I’m taking the refund of the ticket from easyjet? I havnt done anything yet as my priority was to just get home first.

I’m also then able to claim the 250 euros per person under EU261 separately?

Am I missing anything obvious? In anyone’s experience are HSBC / Amex insurance particularly good / bad with handing these types of claim.

    Thanks

My experience with EZ is that they actually pay out without fuss and promptly in these situations.

Insurance will want you to prove you tried EZ in the first instance anyway.

Whether you are due EU261 compensation will depend on the reason for the cancellation.

As above, you must claim from easyJet first before making an insurance claim to HSBC or Amex and the latter anyway probably doesn’t offer enough cover for your claim.

Was the cancellation anything to do with the two easyJet aircraft that clipped wings at MAN yesterday? If so, I doubt you will be eligible for compensation.

Highly doubt it, cancellation was to do with Basel having an 11pm curfew for flights and plane wasn’t going to arrive in time.

@hake-tfc – if that’s the reason, the impact of curfews is a very grey area for compensation claims…
