Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Experience with Emirates ‘My Family’ Program?

I’m looking into Emirates Skywards ‘My Family’ program to pool miles with my brother-in-law. Is this possible? If anyone has managed to pool miles with non-direct family members, how did you do it?

The head of the family can add people to their family pool, the other user has to accept however there is a list of acceptable people

You can spend the Skywards Miles pooled in your My Family account on Classic Reward Flights and flights purchased using Cash+Miles. You can also use them for Upgrade Rewards at check‑in if you’re travelling with the Family Head. Or donate your Miles to support selected initiatives. You can also spend the Miles in your individual account with our retail and lifestyle partners and on Skywards Exclusives events. Emirates may amend the partner list at any time.

I was just wondering if the pooling (using my balance) would work here, so he could redeem a ticket for the Arsenal game, but probably won’t work with our relationship?

Btw I found out pooling only works for miles earned after creating the pool. I am not sure if they changed this, but it was like that about a year ago. Any existing miles don’t count.

Wow that is very poor if true!

Apparently so. I gave up creating one as soon as I learned this.
As if the 3-year expiry on the miles isn’t enough, some bright spark dreamed up this.

This is very much true. Miles are only pooled after creation of the household account. Found out about it last month after transferring miles from Amex and tried to book an award ticket, only to find out that that I can’t combine them with existing miles.

I have not used Emirates for a couple of years but if I am not mistaken, and has not changed recently, the earning rate of the head of the household is only a portion of what should be the full miles earned for any given flight, so not really great. To be fair, I believe Skyward is possible the worst FF program out there.

It’s such a backward rewards program. How many other reputable airline reward schemes out there empty out your remaining points balance after 3 years? The earning rate now is so pitiful I would find it impossible to build up a decent stash within that time for any meaningful redemption/upgrade.

Unless you are flying sufficiently to earn status with Emirates (and hopefully spend the miles before expiry) crediting to a non-terrible partner might be the way to go. I’d probably plump for Aeroplan.
