Hi All
i have an expirying 2-4-1 in April 2023. I understand that i do not have to use before April 2023 but must have a booking confirmed using the voucher prior to that date. I hope that is correct. I have chosen the following but is it value if each avios point is at 0.8
Single person – London to NY Return 1st to 5th Feb , Outbound economy , Return upgrade using Avios to business and 2-4-1 voucher applied
Avios : 13,000
Price per person : 143
taxes: 392.94
Total price to pay : £535.94
You have to have flown the outbound leg by the expiry date, but it looks like your booking will comply with that.
Only you can decide if you’ve got good value, but if your avios are genuinely free, any return is a decent one. Economy out isn’t a great deal though, you’d be better doing CW on that leg and enjoying the lounge and service (unless you’ve booked the day flight for the return).
I’m not sure where you got your pricing – this look like the “old” pricing for economy. Do you mean you’re using the 241 to reduce the avios price by 50%? Where have the 2 cash amounts come from? The fees element should now be priced up as per the new RFS amounts, although you will also be presented with other combinations if using a new-style voucher.
*Just realised that your voucher must be old-style because of the expiry date so 50% reduction doesn’t apply. Were you given a choice of prices? Rob’s article suggests that this won’t happen, but a couple of anecdotal accounts indicate otherwise.

Yes I have an old 2-4-1 and have the option to reduce the avios price. I am unsure if this is value or what other options i have to redeem this voucher before it expires.
I think we’re bit confused by exactly what you’re looking to do.
The price and Avios you’ve quoted is for a single economy return seat. For me, it is coming out at 13,000 avios plus £520, though I’m looking at RFS pricing which you may not see if you’ve not earned or redeemed any Avios in the past 12 months.
If you’re booking for two with a 2for1 voucher you’d be looking at 13,000 Avios for both seats, but still £520 each at that combination level. That assumes you have the option to select that combination with an old style 2for1 (Note: with the voucher selected the options you see may be different).
If you’re using the voucher to half the Avios requirement for one person I’d expect it to drop to 6,500 Avios at that level, but again that it assumes you can do that with your old style 2for1. It was my understand that option is restricted to the new style vouchers.
If you want to return in business class that will substantially increase the Avios and cash required.
Cash fares for the same dates are currently available from £378 (hand baggage only) or £478 (with a checked bag). £520 plus some Avios doesn’t look like a great deal on that basis, although it does come with the advantage that you cancel it for a £35 fee per person, whereas the straight cash fares are non-refundable.
I thought all Y seats to NYC (and some other destinations) were now charged at the RFS fare of 25k avios plus £50 each way?
For me, the best value on this route would be to try and get F on the outbound, NYC is one of the most likely destinations for these seats to appear because of the sheer volume of flights each day. As pointed out above, cash fares are extremely reasonable even in these post-pandemic days, so it makes little sense to use a 241 and avios on this route in the lowest cabins. Obviously you need a certain number of avios to do this.
Correct. 13,000 Avios+£520 (return) is the second lowest Avios/highest cash option off-peak. Clearly more Avios/less cash is better if possible, especially using a 2for1, but I’m going by what’s in the original question. As you say, even 100,000 Avios+£100 isn’t great value compared to the available cash fares.
Needs more information to advise further.
Namster, how many Avios do you have available?
…Correction: Should say “50,000 Avios+£100 isn’t great value compared to the available cash fares.”
That said, if you’re halving the Avios with a 2for1 you could do much worse as it will get you checked luggage and refundable cancellation for a £35 fee.

287,000 avios
Looking for one person the Lon-JFK return 17-22 February , so i added use the 2-4-1 and book and upgrade the return leg, outbound WT, Return using WTP , 13,000 avios + £596.21
correction to above
I would like to have the return leg in WTP. Not sure if i get that option for a cash and upgrade and using the 2-4-1 as it does not then allow use of the 2-4-1 Voucher. Purely using avios for above with all in economy using the 2-4-1 – gives 27500 Avios + £ 100.00
