I recently managed to snag a return from HND to LHR using Avios on Finnair, with a transit in Helsinki. I think I’m correct in saying this but my understanding is that as long as you are staying in the non-Schengen area of the airport, you do not need to pass through any kind of passport control? My partner is Chinese with a Chinese passport so just want to make sure this isn’t going to cause a complication on the way home. I can see on a Finnish government website that citizens of some countries need an airport transit visa bu China isn’t on this list. If anyone could reassure me that I’m correct on my assumptions here, that would be great!

I recently did LHR-HEL-LAX, the HND flight was the one right next to the LAX boarding gate.
It is the same terminal and it takes 5 min to walk from one gate to another.
No passport or security of any kind.
(The LAX flight has an addition security screening because it goes to the US. I was selected to go through that and it is simply a more thorough check of your hand luggage and some questions about what you plan on doing there)
You do go through security when you transit from Japan to the UK in HEL. But I think passports are not checked.
Passports were scrutinised at the departure gate at HND, and my OH (EU Citizen resident in the UK) had problems because of a name mismatch (problems entirely of Finnair’s making).
When flying from LHR, you disembark directly in the departure zone in the non-Schengen area: no border crossing, no security
When flying back from Asia, you do have to go through security after which you get dropped off in the non-Schengen zone.
