Somehow the search button doesn’t show results for Sydney so please direct me if there is a thread.

We have a 3 weeks trip to Australia and the Far East. We will be in Sydney for 6 days, but we are a family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 older children (19 years and 16 years). We are happy with one room as will be out and about most of the time and really need to keep an eye on costs if paying for 2 rooms per night. Definitely need good train connections closeby. My child has intolerances so I would prefer a hotel with breakfast.

I have looked at View Hotel, Vibes and a few others. Don’t mind a Holiday Inn type of hotel. Never used Airbnb as with a hotel chain there is a cleanliness standard or accountability and no last minute cancellations, but if there is a really good one that many people recommend, then open to it. There is a first time for everything! I have family from the USA joining us too who will book what we go for so really wish to go for a place that gives value and has good location and links.

    Any help would be appreciated.

So practically speaking 4 adults. Well, talking about Holiday Inn, last year I did a mattress run at the Holiday Inn Potts Point, and they do have rooms for 4. Near to Kings Cross station as well as walking distance from the city (not at midday in the height of summer but otherwise OK). Breakfast is not that great though, but having intolerances is not in itself a reason to have breakfast in the hotel… most restaurants and cafes in Sydney are good with dealing with this issue, even occasionally proactively asking.

There’s also Holiday Inn Parramatta… not too far to walk to the station and there are express trains to the city. In the CBD itself I think it will be harder to get a room for 4 people unless you splurge for a suite which may cost more than two regular rooms.

Also don’t mind being a bit far out but taking a quick train into the city so train links would be key.

Thanks, I just came across Paramatta before reading this post so that’s good to know that it’s an option. Yes, good point about intolerances. We have struggled in some countries to explain gluten-free, dairy-free and soya-free but Sydney would be different. I have preferred hotels as they have his milk, bread and other stuff all in one place.

We used one of the Meriton Suites in the CBD when visiting Sydney with adult children (Full disclosure, this was a decade ago). It gave us the flexibility to cater for ourselves (there was a large supermarket close by) and a place to return to and relax post day / pre evening without being on top of one another. When the offspring were a little younger and on road 5rips in the USA we would do the single large room, but there we were on the move and the family dynamics were different.

Depending on where Sydney falls in your itinerary, that the apartment had laundry facilities may also be a consideration. However, depending on where you are headed in the Far East you may find laundry services at low cost. When we went to Vietnam and Cambodia earlier this year for three weeks we were advised to pack for two weeks and budget for the use of a hotel or local laundry..

Thanks, Meriton Suites have quite a few neat properties so will have a look.

We had a 3-bed suite at Best Western Plus – Hotel Stellar, near to Hyde Park, not far from the Pullman. They also have a 2-bed suite available, plus “normal” rooms. However, the cafe bar was small and we never used it for breakfast. We were able to walk/bus to the station and we also walked into the CBD itself to pick up tour buses and the like.

The suite was perfect for our specific needs and reasonably priced.

I stayed at the Harbourview Hotel (is this the View Hotel you’re talking about @S879?) for 6 weeks (3 x 2 weeks over a period of ~18 months) for work about 12 years ago. The views are great and it’s less than 5 minutes’ walk from a train station that will take you from North Sydney to ‘main’ Sydney. Breakfast was very good and hotel was clean. I loved that staying there got you free access to an open-air Olympic-sized swimming pool really close to the bridge.

And Din Tai Fung Sydney (also been to the Taipei one) became my favourite restaurant globally during those visits.

I can also recommend the Meriton suites. We stayed in one last year and having the living space, kitchen and laundry facilities was great. The prices are the best if you join their loyalty scheme and book direct.

Thank you all for the great tips and recommendations.
