Meeting friends from US in London tomorrow, they are staying near Buckingham Palace. We have most of day so we can travel around town, on the list is pub and fish and chips, I know London is big but would appreciate any suggestions and as the weather should be nice outside drinks, not sure how busy Mondays are so don’t want to wonder around aimlessly, appreciate your inside knowledge.
For Fish & Chips you could have a look at Poppies, they have a number of locations. I’ve been to the one in Spitalfields which was good. Not the cheapest but I’m not sure where is anymore.
Most pubs do fish and chips BUT the fish isn’t fried as it would be in a chip shop (and neither are the chips), so its really two different things. Perhaps head to a branch of Poppies and then to a nearby pub afterwards>
Ah, this reminds me:
I was in that London the other day and someone tried to sell me fish and chips for fifteen quid.
This was in a chippy in zone four. At that price, I was expecting a sprinkling of Charlie to go with the salt & vinegar.
I dread to think what it would cost in central.
It’s like ten quid oop norf.
Controversial but since the OP’s friends are American, I find the US presentation with smaller bits of fish a bit like big tempura tastier. Our fries chips are better mind.
But very slightly more seriously, give them a proper chippy experience sat on a bench or in a park, especially as the weather will be gorgeous. None of this poncey restaurant stuff. And while we’re at it, proper fish like haddock.
Gravy vs. curry sauce vs. mushy peas is a choice too controversial for me even after the first comment.
As everyone knows, it’s almost impossible to get decent fish & chips in the south and even more so in London!
However there is a pub that does really good fish & chips – although unfortunately as with every other chippy down here they also leave the skin on, for some unfathomable reasonable, but it’s still a 9/10.
The pub is called The George in Fitzrovia (Regent St end) and well worth a visit. This is a realistic review, even if the bloke is a bit of a numpty:

Excellent points, though I’m not sure you can get haddock so easily in a regular (non poncey as you say) chippy in central.
Actually are there even any regular chippies in central? I think the Harry Ramsden in Euston station shut down some time ago?
The George in Fitzrovia
Woah woah… Did you just pair Fitzrovia with fish & chips?
That’s as unlikely a team up as in a 1980s cop movie.
Are you saying fish and chips have become gentrified?
If your friends are staying near Buckingham Palace, then try The Laughing Halibut

A regular down-to-earth proper chippy in Westminster with a restaurant area.
And not poncey at all 🙂

That looks well alright.
Prices are reasonable for the area
Thanks
I think the Sea Shell in Lisson Grove is now open Mondays. (Though the halibut recommendation above is a closer location to SW1.) Take away or eat in but no garden. Can usually get haddock and weirdly their fish cakes (round, big, deep fried) are sought after.
The Mayfair Chippy is normally pretty good although always got a queue and not cheap obviously
However best fish and chip shop is Fishers in Fulham. Only a couple of stops along the district line and great to eat in or get a takeaway and sit in bishops park down by the river. Always take non locals here who are craving fish and chips and they have all been very happy
With your username, surprised you didn’t know this… 🙂
+1 for The Laughing Halibut, I’m a regular and was in there a fortnight ago – fastest service of any sit in dining experience you’ll ever have and decent (for London) prices! Plus the guy who is always on serving and manning the till is really friendly. The seating is very tight and it’s usually rammed with a mix of tourists and work groups but you never wait long for a table. They take card and are always happy for everyone on a table to pay individually because you pay at the till, not the table.

Went for drinks here for the first time just a couple of weeks ago (following q Wigmore
cheese toastie): very nice locale/atmosphere with interesting nooks for sitting.
