Following on from my question about the best place in Thailand for digital nomads, my daughter has now told me that they will be going to Vietnam instead. Either Phu Quoc or Nha Trang. Any experience of either?
I’ve been tasked with finding “best” one way flights. Best is defined as cheapest, shortest, least number of flights and least hanging around airports. Thanks to this site I am now considered the family guru on flights but I am stuck here. It’s cash and they have no airline preferences.
I can’t find a route that isn’t tortuous. Not great for Mum & Dad making short holiday visits😩
Any advice on getting them there greatly appreciated. They’re heading out on 1 July so need to get it sorted. ( I know it’s rainy season and have advised of that but I’m told Leeds is pretty rainy too🤣
Look at flightconnections.com
There are a lot of small airports in Vietnam.
The trains are good too and will get you to Nha Trang I think. So the least flying option might be to fly to HCMC and train from there. seat61.com
Phu Quoc is awful – the sea and beaches are absolutely covered in rubbish except immediately in front of the big hotels of which there are too many so that none of the infrastructure – roads, sewage, rubbish collection, water can cope. Serious box jellyfish problem. The key tourist sight is a temple built in 2019.
They have fish/prawn farming on the starfish beach side of the island and you can see the raw sewage in the water with the fish restaurants on pontoons just metres away. The starfish beach is dirty and tourists pick the starfish out of the water for that all important photo.
Vietnam suffers somewhat from completely uncontrolled tourism and it is particularly bad here.
Thanks @memesweeper that’s really helpful.
@JDB I’ve read a few bad reports about Phu Quoc and have tried to deter. I hope your message will help.
Do you have a view on Nha Trang ? Also, do you think tourism in Thailand is better controlled than in Vietnam ?
“cheapest, shortest,” is an oxymoron as the cheapest are cheap for a reason.
As it’s a cash ticket and assuming economy, any of QR, EK or SQ would be good.
My choice would be SQ as you’d have completed the longest leg first, great airport to relax, good lounges using PP, brilliant foood options etc.
@BBbeter. Yes I understand the oxymoron. It’s a question of finding the balance between time and price. I’m recommending that they get it all on one ticket to avoid missed flights due to delays so that rules Singapore out .
Looks like Vietnam airways is the best one way option from LHR, £1058 in premium economy and 17 hrs 25. This compares to Qatar from BHX £752 in economy and 21 hours 50 mins.
I am so wedded to Oneworld that it makes my eyes bleed to look at other airlines😬 but on this occasion it’s the way to go.
Not sure about now, but pre covid we visited Nha Trang. We visited during the typhoon in 2017 which was devastating. The place was full of Russians. We got asked a few times “oh you”re English, why you visit here? Everyone is Russian here”.
Would be good to hear what it’s like now, but I won’t be rushing back.
Perhaps fly to Bangkok and break the trip for a couple of days and then continue to Vietnam?
We’re also planning a Vietnam trip at the moment.. I’m a bit of a fan of small/niche domestic flights and airports.. any particular recommendations?!

Vietjet air is good, though read some remarks they cancelled a few flights lately. They got famous for a reason, you can google it.
In Thailand, Nok air is good.

When you go this time, you can ask them how they are dodging the army draft.
Is there any wriggle room? My choice would be Hue, I absolutely loved the place. Close to Da Nang and Hoi An etc
As for the flight, if it is direct, as already mentioned, vietnam airlines appears to be the way to go.
Could always go to Hong Kong on BA then the short hop to Da nang on HK express.
@yorkshireRich thanks for the suggestions. Had a quick look at Hue but prices for Airbnb seem to be quite a bit higher than Nha Trang.

Perhaps there’s a good reason why Hue is more expensive than Nha Trang… I don’t know Nha Trang, but if you Google it, there’s more than enough to put anyone off; it sounds as bad as Phu Quoc for similar but even more reasons, including dead coral and a few of the results say these are actually the two places to avoid in Vietnam. That @YorkshireRich always sounds like a very sensible chap.
Drastically cheaper than Hue and well off the the beaten path: Quy Nhon; Bai Xep a few miles down the road is sensational if all you want to do is sit on the beach and drink beer. Digi nomad heaven.
I have offered all our collective advice and yet flights to HCMC and then on to Phu Quoc are booked 😩 Ended up BA to Doha, QR to HCMC then an overnight then Vietnam air to Phu Quoc all for £740 each.
Each to their own and I truly hope they find it delightful. They intend to move around until they find their happy place. Watch this space !
