  • 44 posts

Hello – has anyone tried to get from Manchester to Perth (Western Australia) using points?

just looking at the best way to go about this.
BA requiring 2 flights and having to go to Sydney, meaning a long internal flight to get over to Perth.

Thinking Qatar might be the best option, but can’t seem to find out a way to search with points. Do I need to transfer some avios to Qatar in order to price this up?

Search on BA.com and Qatar comes up as an option on that route. I tried economy which had results but I’d imagine that you’re looking for business?

Does anyone think I’m playing with fire here and it’s not worth taking the risk……

Looks like there is Qatar availability for the dates I want. I’ll need to do this on the Qatar website though, as BA only showing economy tickets available, whereas Qatar shows availability in other cabins.

I have a Barclays upgrade voucher to use, so I’m thinking of flying LON-DOH – using the voucher to upgrade from PE to CW – a BA booking. Then I’ll make a Qatar booking using points to take me to Perth. (and then reversed for the journey back).

I’m assuming these will be on different tickets and therefore worried that BA will be a failure and I’ll miss the flight to Perth.

You just allow more time in Doha to reduce the risk.

I would overnight in DOH, and get a decent night’s sleep before continuing to Perth. Stressing about missing a connection would spoil the first leg.

What’s the avios and cash requirement if you booked on Qatar only? Which cabin? And what is it if you did the first leg on BA with the voucher?

If you could get the standard Qatar pricing, rather than the 2x rate, then not sure if complicating it with a separate BA booking is worth it, unless there’s a large price difference or if the Qatar flights would be in Y.

Am sure you have checked this but I found “taxes” on the QR site were around half what BA wanted to charge.

And if you’re struggling with availability on the MAN-DOH leg, remember that QR are also flying out of the country’s second city on a daily basis once again – and reward availability was good when I needed it.

I’m looking at 360,000 avios plus £553 for a return in business class.
    MAN-DOH-PER.

I was just seeing how feasible it is to make use of either
    a) BA voucher worth £700, against a cash booking – the T&C’s say avios cannot be involved
    or
    b) a Barclays upgrade voucher.

If I burn 360,000 it puts our summer holiday next year at risk , and the Mrs wont be happy!!

So presumably you need to look at the overall cost of both trips. I’m finding it easier to burn points when it’s just me (easy availability, happy to take circuitous routes or long layovers) and spend cash when it’s the whole family.

But 360k Avios that must be 2x pricing. no? It’s 45k one way UK-UAE.

That 360k avois is worth at least £3.6k, add that to your taxes and ask if you can’t do better on a cash fare???
