Forums Payment cards American Express Forfeited Amex Membership Rewards points

    Morning All,

Just had the unpleasant experience of discovering I have fortified all my saved up Amex MP’s, (about 250,000). I cancelled my Amex Gold card last month with the intention to apply for and replaced with another amex gold to save the fee keep the points as Amex for the flexibility.

Unfortunately last month was a busy one and the renewal slipped my mind until today, as it has been longer than 30 days the points have been forfeited as per Amex T&Cs. The advisor on the phone said he could nothing but I have requested a manager call back in the slim chance they can help!

Has anyone experienced anything similar or got any advise for this horrible situation?

Hope everyone else is having a better morning!

They are gone I’m afraid. Bit of a silly thing to do. But done now. Move on.

@TopCat – that’s not good, however, Amex can often be merciful in these sorts of situations so when speaking to them it’s important to remember that if they do anything it will be purely on a goodwill basis so you need to deal with them accordingly.

I wouldn’t be rushing to tell Amex that you cancelled your Gold card with a view to opening a new account to evade the fee…

You will need a good sob story!

I must get my eyes checked.

I read the title as “Fortified Amex Membership Rewards points” 💪

This is why it’s good advice to have the free AMRC card sat on your account in the background to avoid errors like this. Feel for you, @TopCat. Good luck, I hope you get them back.

Very foolish. I do feel sorry for you to be honest as we’ve all been there. If you tell Amex you were avoiding the £195 there’s no way I’d show any mercy. I’d suggest your best option is to say you forgot to move them out to Avios, IHG, Hilton etc (as you wish). And ask them very politely. Or say you’re happy to open a Gold card and pay the annual fee for that. That way there’s maybe a small chance you’ll come across a very kind agent on one of their good days…,
