Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club ‘Free’ UK domestic redemptions

  • 13 posts

    Hello,

Could someone please help clarify a question I have about the ‘free’ domestic connection offered from the likes of Manchester etc.

I want to book MAN-LHR-MAD (using IB metal on the international sector A330) via BA using BA Premium Amex voucher.

When I search via BA.com you get the two married up sectors – MAN to LHR then LHR – MAD as an option using the mix of BA and IB carriers. The website throws up an issue saying you can’t book online and must call.

When I call, the agent says I need to first book the LHR-MAD sector using the voucher online, then call back to add the MAN sector to avoid paying the £15 call centre fee (despite this being a BA IT issue).

However having done step one, the next agent I speak to quotes me full price for the redemption between MAN and LHR.

I was under the assumption from previous bookings the MAN-LHR sector wouldn’t cost any more Avios than the original international sector and would just be the extra taxes.

Is this not the case? If so, is this because it’s a short haul international redemption or because it’s on IB metal?

It anyone can help shed light on the policy or rules I’d be grateful. I can only find HfP articles from 2014 on the subject.

    Cheers!

You only get the domestic connection at no extra cost on long haul flights. They were all free at one time but this changed some years ago so short haul redemptions from the regions via London are rarely good value any more.

Have you looked at cash bookings on IB? MAN-MAD direct can be great value if you book via Iberia, often around £75 return if you book fairly far out.

As far as I am aware the ‘free’ domestic connection is only on long haul flights

Brilliant, is it just a benefit BA to BA long haul flights or can it be used for BA to IB long haul?

Only BA to/from the Long Haul Hub (so LGW or LHR)

It wouldn’t be a domestic connection if you were flying to MAD, where IB long haul flights originate. You can book it as a normal award flight, but you don’t really want it on the same booking as you incur the much higher BA surcharges/APD. On the return, it doesn’t matter as you don’t pay it.
