Forums Payment cards American Express Going over the referral limit?

  • 8 posts

I recently sent my Amex Platinum referral link to a few friends just before the end of the 65k offer, and 6 of them used it to sign up! This meant I ended up with 144,000 bonus points from referrals on my account, which is substantially over the 90k per calendar year limit.

I got a bit worried that Amex might claw the points back, so transferred them to Avios – which has been transferred over now.

However I haven’t actually reached the spend criteria for my own 65k bonus yet – is it likely Amex will try to claw the points back? Either from my sign-up bonus, or putting my account at a negative points balance?

Same here, we received 24k+24k+24k+18k. They just reduce down the last referral to fit under the 90k limit.

You could ask your friends to wait until Jan to sign up, where the 90k gets renewed

I`ve been overpaid before – there were no repercussions.

This is what I assumed would happen, but they paid out the full 24k six times. Perhaps because they were all signed up in a short period of time, and so the cap hadn’t been applied to my account yet?

They were signing up specifically for the improved bonus, which expired on 25th oct.

Thanks, hopefully the case for me here as well!
