Hi folks!
From searching the forums, I can see that Amex have previously had an offer to upgrade from the Gold card to the Platinum card – does this happen with any sort of regularity? I took out the Gold card earlier this year to bag the free lounge access which now means I’m ineligible for the sign up bonus on the Platinum card 😢 Annoyingly, I also didn’t qualify for a welcome bonus on the Gold card when I applied as I already had the free BA Amex (I know the rules have changed now), so I’d prefer not to miss out again!
AFAIK it’s always available, but the SUB & spend targets might change seasonally.
Link I used was https://www.americanexpress.com/en-gb/benefits/upgrade/platinum/, looks like the current SUB is 20k MR points for £4k spend in 3 months, but it’s better than nothing if you got the gold SUB recently as well.
I came across this page yesterday but apparently my accounts were not applicable for it. I even spoke to someone on the phone who checked and confirmed I wasn’t eligible but didn’t know why.
Could it be because I’ve not had the card for a year yet and have therefore not paid a membership fee? I found some comments online about needing to have the card for 14 months before offers were available but they seemed very US-centric.
Thanks for confirming I wasn’t totally wide of the mark 🙂
I’m also kind of the same boat…
The Gold Credit card annual fee is about to post and I can still get a pro-rata refund. I’m interested in the Platinum as I have international travel coming up soon and it would be nice to use the benefits, especially the travel insurance, instead of buying separately (turns out travel insurance for US and Canada are quite expensive).
But I also don’t want to me any offers that may be coming up soon.
I tried the upgrade link to Platinum but it says I am not eligible. Maybe I need to have the Gold fee posted and paid first?
For reference when I upgraded early this year it was about a month after I had paid the Gold annual fee (i.e start of year 2), so it may be the case that you need to hold it for a year at least. The gold fee also got deducted from the platinum fee when I upgraded so the plat fee for my first year only ended up being around £400 odd.
Also worth noting I did put a considerable spend through the gold card in that first year so that may have had something to do with it as well.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That is reassuring then, if they remove the Gold fee from the Platinum.
