I don’t know if this is an error but at the moment, if you book a trip to or from a US city where RFS applies, it’s possible not just to add a domestic connection for nothing, but also in a different travel class. So I’ve just booked ORD-LHR-MAN, with the long haul leg in WT (need 3 seats and going to try and book the exit row), and the LHR-MAN connection in CE, by selecting the stopover option during the process. In total, it’s cost 90k avios for 3 of us plus £150. We’ll get the lounge at LHR between flights for a shower and breakfast, then CE up to MAN, at no extra cost whatsoever. I think this is a pretty good deal!
We’re flying MAN-LHR-IAD in F, connecting to MIA for a couple of weeks, the returning ORD-LHR-MAN over Xmas and New Year, and the flights will have cost 178k avios plus £1500 for 3 of us (factoring in the 241 plus off peak outbound date), at the most expensive time of year to travel.
Interesting. What would the domestic leg have normally cost?
The cash price is currently £313 pp but it’s a long time out so that might fluctuate – CE to MAN is not usually a cheap option though.
Normally you don’t pay any avios for a domestic connection on a long haul flight but you DO pay the RFS fee, so £25 pp per sector on CE. However, when you currently select a RFS option from the US, this charge doesn’t seem to be added, so you’re getting even better value out of the RFS option.
