Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

  • 1 post

Hi, I’m looking to fly with British Airways from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare Club World Business class) using a BAPP reward voucher for myself.

its coming in at 180,000 points + £750. This seems alot to me. I’m looking for confirmation that it is.

I tried selecting Premium Economy for the flight home but the points and price didnt change.

Its for August next year Saturday to Saturday

    Thanks

Valuing an Avios at 1p means £1800, so £2550 total return. I would personally not fly this route at this price. In fact, having done a lot of US travel, I would consider flying Business out and Economy home on a red-eye and getting a day use airport hotel on arrival.

It’s also wrong. 180k return is peak redemption, but if you’re using a voucher, you should be getting it for half that. Furthermore more, if you’re changing to Premium Economy and seeing no difference, there is something not working.

Cash element also feels high, I’d expect it to be closer to £500.

If you dont mind starting from Madrid. Itll be 50k and £226 exactly using BAPP 241 voucher (peak period) for you in business on IB.

That sounds like the rate for two people? Are you sure you’ve searched just for one person with the voucher ticked?

I’ve just had a look and that is the price for two people.

For one, halve that to 90,000 + £375.

Business out, premium economy back is 75,000 + £340.

I always add on £300 to the quoted fare to account for the annual fee on the Amex. And tend to do a rough and ready 1p per Avios.

    So one person in business costs £900 + £375 + £300 = £1,575 which is okay I guess.

The discount for coming back premium economy is derisory!

I’d do PE in day, just as comfortable if you don’twantto sleep, and business at night. But if you are using 241 at half avios business both ways is only a little more

I think when you select the voucher the system defaults to a search for 2 people, so you might have to go back to the start and select one passenger to see the price with the 50% avios discount.

Also, if you have a little flexibility with your travel dates, there should be one day per week in August (usually Tuesdays), when BA uses off-peak pricing.

PE avios pricing I find high unless you can get off-peak.
